Western Union said its USDPT stablecoin is set for a May launch and has reached the final stage of readiness after months of preparation. The first use case is not retail distribution. The company plans to deploy it as a settlement instrument inside its money movement network.
Speaking on the first-quarter earnings call, CEO Devin McGranahan said Western Union has moved beyond planning. In his words, the issue is no longer whether the company will be active in digital assets, but how quickly it can scale. That framing puts execution at the center of the next phase.
USDPT is aimed at settlement, not direct consumer rollout
USDPT is a U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin built on Solana and issued by Anchorage Digital Bank. Western Union first revealed the project in October as part of a broader effort to modernize how money moves across its network.
McGranahan said the token will not debut as a consumer-facing stablecoin. Instead, Western Union intends to use it as an alternative settlement rail with agents in select countries and across core payment corridors. The opening strategy is operational: speed and settlement efficiency come first.
DAN will connect wallets to Western Union cash-out infrastructure
The company is also launching the Digital Asset Network, or DAN. The platform is designed to connect crypto wallets with Western Union’s retail footprint and agent network, giving users a path to convert digital assets into local currency.
Western Union said the first DAN partner is expected to go live this week. McGranahan said millions of wallet users will be able to move from digital assets into local currency through Western Union’s retail network. That creates a direct bridge between on-chain holdings and physical payout infrastructure.
Stable Card is planned for later this year
Later this year, Western Union also plans to introduce a U.S. dollar Stable Card. The card is intended to let users hold value in stablecoins and spend across dozens of markets.
The company said the product may be relevant in inflation-sensitive markets where users want dollar-denominated value for daily use. Management said the focus now is to scale adoption and fold digital assets into Western Union’s core money movement platform.
