Blockchain tracking service Onchain Lens has detected that a whale address initiated a significant short position on Ethereum. The address opened a short of 21,948 ETH with 10x leverage, bringing the contract's notional value to approximately $44 million. Shorting involves borrowing an asset, selling it at the current market price, and aiming to repurchase at a lower price to return the loan, thus profiting from a decline. The size of this position underscores the trader's firm bearish conviction on ETH's short-term trajectory.
The position carries a liquidation price of $2,339.76. If Ethereum's price rises and reaches this level, the short will be automatically liquidated to cap further losses. The 10x leverage magnifies both potential rewards and risks—a mere 10% adverse price move could wipe out the entire margin. The trade's profitability hinges entirely on price movement: a continued downtrend would yield substantial gains for the whale, while a rebound toward the liquidation threshold would expose the trader to massive losses.
