WhiteLine Daily said the market is moving into a different stage of the AI investment cycle. For the past two years, major technology companies largely used internal cash flow to build AI infrastructure. That is starting to change. Alphabet has begun leaning on both debt and equity, and Oracle is also expanding external financing. In WhiteLine’s view, investors now need to judge not only how much companies are willing to spend, but also what that spending costs to finance and how much revenue it can ultimately produce.
Alphabet and IBM results on July 22 could show where enterprise AI budgets are going
Alphabet and IBM are scheduled to report Q2 earnings, or final results, on July 22 U.S. time. WhiteLine said the two companies reflect different parts of the AI spending chain and could help show how enterprise budgets are being reallocated.
IBM has already offered an early read, and the picture was weak. The company preliminarily forecast Q2 revenue of $17.2 billion, up 1% year over year. Software revenue rose 5%, consulting revenue was roughly flat, and infrastructure revenue fell 7%. IBM said some customers shifted quarterly capital spending toward servers, storage, and memory to secure hardware that remains supply-constrained.
That, according to WhiteLine, suggests enterprise AI spending is rising, but the added budget is not flowing evenly across the technology sector. Hardware and data center vendors may get orders first, while traditional software and consulting spend may face pressure.
For Alphabet, the question is different. WhiteLine said the issue is whether Google Cloud can turn that shift toward compute into revenue, profit, and orders. Google Cloud posted Q1 revenue growth of 63% to $20 billion, with operating profit at about $6.6 billion. Q2, the note said, will test whether that pace can continue.
WhiteLine added that one of the market’s easiest mistakes is to treat higher CapEx as proof that AI demand has already been validated. The real test on July 22 is whether investment and revenue are accelerating together. If Alphabet keeps raising investment while cloud profit and orders fail to improve, the market may start viewing that extra CapEx less as growth spending and more as future depreciation and financing pressure.
Falling free cash flow does not automatically mean Alphabet will slow down
In its section on core metrics, WhiteLine focused on free cash flow. Alphabet generated about $45.8 billion in operating cash flow in Q1 and spent about $35.7 billion on capital expenditures, leaving free cash flow at about $10.1 billion. Even so, the company raised its 2026 CapEx guidance to $180 billion to $190 billion and said 2027 should see another significant increase.
WhiteLine noted that free cash flow is simply operating cash flow minus capital expenditures. The faster a company builds data centers, the lower current-period free cash flow tends to be. That makes the metric useful for showing cash consumption, but not enough on its own to determine whether a company must stop investing.
The report said Alphabet still has fast-growing cloud revenue and strong operating cash flow. As long as AI demand continues to exceed available compute capacity, the company is more likely to expand financing, reduce buybacks, or accept weaker short-term free cash flow than to give up ground in infrastructure competition.
WhiteLine’s conclusion here was direct: Alphabet is unlikely to hit the brakes in the near term just because free cash flow is down. Cash flow pressure becomes a capital allocation problem only if AI revenue, orders, and margins keep lagging behind depreciation and financing costs.
Alphabet has already shifted to a three-part funding model: cash, bonds, and equity
WhiteLine said Alphabet’s financing mix has changed in a meaningful way. The company raised about $31.51 billion in the global bond market in February, including an unusual 100-year bond. In June, it also announced an equity financing plan totaling $84.75 billion. Alphabet has explicitly said AI infrastructure will be funded through a combination of operating cash flow, debt, and equity.
To WhiteLine, that means AI investment can no longer rely only on current-period cash generation. Large technology companies are using the full balance sheet and shifting part of the investment burden to creditors and new shareholders.
On credit capacity, the report said Alphabet still has ample room. It cited S&P estimates that the company’s adjusted leverage would be about 0.2x in 2026 and about 0.3x in 2027, still well below the roughly 1x threshold seen as a downgrade warning line.
Still, WhiteLine cautioned that ratings are not the only constraint. Equity issuance creates dilution, and debt issuance raises interest expense. Even before a company gets close to a downgrade, stock and bond investors may demand a higher return.
Its judgment was that the first hard brake on AI CapEx is not weaker free cash flow. It is net leverage moving toward the ratings red line and borrowing costs rising materially. If Alphabet remains far below the 1x leverage level, Q2 is more likely to bring stable or even higher CapEx plans.
Oracle shows that valuation pressure can arrive before a ratings line is hit
WhiteLine used Oracle as a stress test for that idea. Oracle expects FY2027 total CapEx to reach as much as $95 billion. Of that, about $70 billion would be borne by the company itself, while another roughly $20 billion to $25 billion is expected to be repaid by customers. Oracle also plans to raise nearly $40 billion through debt and equity financing.
Even though remaining performance obligations climbed to $638 billion and order demand stayed strong, Oracle’s stock still fell as much as 12% afterward. WhiteLine said investors were focused less on order strength itself and more on whether those orders could generate enough profit to cover data center depreciation, interest expense, and the cost of new financing.
That, the note argued, shows capital markets do not wait until a company actually reaches a ratings red line before repricing it. When CapEx, debt, and financing costs all rise together while revenue and profit realization lag behind, valuation can come under pressure first.
WhiteLine then sharpened the point. The dangerous mix is not simply high CapEx and low free cash flow. It is a situation where CapEx keeps rising while net leverage, CDS, and credit spreads worsen, but AI revenue and profit fail to accelerate at the same time. If the credit market starts charging more first, semiconductor and data center orders may still carry momentum for a while, but valuations could start diverging before that demand fades.
WhiteLine’s main takeaway
WhiteLine said the market is shifting from pricing how long AI revenue can keep growing to calculating how much profit each dollar of CapEx can produce and how much more a company can borrow to stay in the race. Because Alphabet still appears far from its credit red line, the report said investment is likely to keep accelerating. The real risk, in its view, emerges only when net leverage, financing costs, and AI returns all deteriorate together.
