Cryptocurrency payments platform Wirex has announced the acquisition of its first money transmission license in the United States, issued by the Georgia Department of Banking and Finance. The license, granted on July 30 to Wirex USA, enables the company to operate a cryptocurrency exchange business in the state and paves the way for its full U.S. launch.

U.S. Expansion Plans

Wirex revealed the news on Friday, confirming that the license is the first success in its strategy to offer fully compliant crypto management capabilities to American customers. Harold Montgomery, Managing Director of Wirex USA, stated: “This license in Georgia is the first step in Wirex’s approach to providing fully compliant cryptocurrency management capabilities in the hands of its customers.” The company added: “We’re planning to launch our services in the US in the coming months.” Wirex’s U.S. offering will center on a next-generation cryptocurrency platform linked to a spending card, similar to its popular product in other markets.

Global Reach and Compliance

Headquartered in the U.K., Wirex already serves 3 million customers across 130 countries. Its payment cards are accepted at over 54 million locations where Visa is accepted. The company is regulated by the U.K.’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and holds a license to issue cards in Europe. The Georgia license marks Wirex’s entry into the highly regulated U.S. payments market, a move that underscores its commitment to compliance and operational transparency.

Supported Assets and Rewards

Wirex currently supports 19 cryptocurrencies along with traditional fiat wallets, including USD, EUR, GBP, BTC, ETH, LTC, XRP, WXT, DAI, NANO, and XLM. The platform also features Cryptoback, a crypto rewards program that automatically credits users with up to 1.5% back in bitcoin on every in-store purchase made with the Wirex card. Last month, Wirex became the first cryptocurrency-native platform to secure a Mastercard principal membership, allowing it to issue payment cards directly, reducing costs and accelerating transaction speeds. The company stated that this achievement brings it closer to its mission of “making all currencies equal.”

Industry Implications

Wirex’s U.S. license acquisition comes at a time when regulatory clarity is becoming increasingly important for crypto payment firms. By securing a state-level money transmitter license, Wirex not only gains a foothold in the world’s largest economy but also sets a precedent for other crypto-native companies seeking to expand into the U.S. market. The company expects to roll out its services in multiple states over time, leveraging its established infrastructure and compliance framework.
