Wolfspeed (NYSE: WOLF) has launched a premium 200 mm N-type silicon carbide (SiC) substrate, expanding its wafer materials lineup with a product the company says is built to improve production yield through lower defect density and better wafer shape stability.
Defect control and wafer yield
According to the company’s news release, the new 200 mm N-type SiC substrate shows gains in both defect density and wafer stability. Verified by X-ray topography analysis, the substrate recorded a micropipe density below 0.01 per square centimeter, which Wolfspeed said translates to fewer than three micropipes per wafer. The company also said the product has very low screw dislocation density.
Wolfspeed said those characteristics reduce variation in starting materials, cut defects, and maintain batch-to-batch consistency. That, in turn, is intended to improve downstream process performance, help semiconductor manufacturers lift first-pass design success rates, and reduce certification delays.
Cengiz Balkas, Ph.D., executive vice president of Wolfspeed’s materials business, said Wolfspeed is in a leading position in silicon carbide materials technology and that the 200 mm portfolio reflects that expertise.
Applications in high-voltage power and AI data centers
The substrate is designed for high-power, high-frequency silicon carbide devices. The article listed electric vehicle powertrains, ultra-fast charging stations, solar inverters, and industrial drives among the main use cases.
In AI computing infrastructure, Wolfspeed is working with AI data center and power systems partner LITEON to advance an 800 VDC high-efficiency power supply unit (PSU) solution for AI computing data centers. LITEON has adopted Wolfspeed’s silicon carbide solution in its side-car cabinet power system, using SiC MOSFETs to improve energy conversion efficiency in high-power computing environments and reduce cooling costs.
Production and supply chain reach
Wolfspeed said it has been in continuous volume production of 200 mm wafers since 2022, giving it an established supply base.
On the materials side, Renesas has signed a 10-year supply agreement with Wolfspeed worth $2 billion. On the downstream component side, related products have entered the supply chains of GM, Mercedes-Benz, and ZF, including automakers and tier-one suppliers. Wolfspeed said that network has helped increase scale across the industry.
