X has launched its updated Cashtags feature on iPhone in the US and Canada, placing live price charts for stocks and crypto assets directly inside the social feed. In Canada, the rollout also includes a Wealthsimple pilot that lets users move from a post to an order flow without leaving X.
Search, tap, trade inside the timeline
According to X product lead Nikita Bier, the feature works in three steps. Users can search for or publish posts containing a Cashtag such as $TSLA or $BTC, and they can also paste a blockchain contract address. X then suggests the matching stock or token. After a user taps the Cashtag, the platform opens a page with a live chart and related discussion. Canadian users will also see a Wealthsimple trading button on that page, allowing them to place orders through the pilot integration.
The update also targets a long-standing problem with the old Cashtag format. For years, the $XXX convention on Twitter and X functioned mostly as plain text, and the same ticker could point to different assets. The new system adds asset binding so that discussion tied to a Cashtag is mapped more clearly to a single instrument.
Why the rollout starts with iPhone and Canada
X chose to begin with iOS users in the US and Canada. The report notes that Apple’s App Store applies strict review standards to financial and crypto-related functions, so shipping on iPhone first suggests the product has already cleared that approval layer. Canada was selected for the trading pilot for regulatory and execution reasons. Integrating with a US brokerage would involve a more complex ruleset, while Canada offered a more practical starting point. Wealthsimple, which supports both stock and crypto trading, became the first partner in that test.
Bier said X has long been a major venue where traders and investors consume financial information, and that capital allocation decisions are often influenced by what users see in the timeline. Cashtags is meant to shorten the path between information and execution.
An old ticker format gets a built-in execution layer
Cashtags are not new. Twitter introduced support for the $XXX format back in 2012, but for more than a decade the tag mostly remained a text convention used in market conversation. Charts, pricing data, and trading actions were still handled by bots, external links, or third-party services. This rollout changes that by pulling market data and a trading entry point into the native X experience.
The launch also fits into X’s broader push toward an “Everything App” model that includes payments, trading, and other financial services. The report points out that Nikita Bier joined X in 2025 to help shape product direction, and that he is also an active adviser in the Solana ecosystem. That has drawn extra attention to the platform’s support for onchain assets.
For crypto users, contract address support stands out
In crypto, the most notable part of the update is not the addition of live charts for $BTC or $ETH. It is the fact that Cashtags can recognize direct blockchain contract addresses. That expands coverage beyond major tokens already listed on centralized exchanges. Memecoins, newly issued tokens, and projects that have not reached larger venues can potentially be identified and surfaced with matching data inside X.
The report highlights Solana as a particularly relevant case because it remains a major hub for memecoins and rapid token launches. If X can reliably recognize Solana contract addresses and attach real-time data to them, the link between social discussion and onchain liquidity becomes much tighter. Bier said Cashtags is only the first step, and that X wants to become the platform of choice for finance and crypto communities.
