Nikita Bier, product lead at X (formerly Twitter) and advisor to Solana, confirmed on July 23 that Smart Cashtags will launch within weeks. Users clicking on cashtags like $BTC or $NVDA will see live price charts, related discussions, and the ability to execute trades directly — transforming the current system where cashtags only display ticker symbols.
Smart Cashtags: From Text Labels to One-Click Trading
Currently, cashtags on X are static text markers. The upgrade will recognize not only traditional stock tickers but also on-chain smart contract addresses. Bier said the API can fetch on-chain data "near-instantly," meaning even small tokens not listed on major exchanges can be found via Smart Cashtags once minted. For trade execution, X is expected to partner with regulated platforms like Coinbase and Base, with X handling discovery and discussion while licensed entities process transactions.
Bier Blasts Crypto Spam: 'Damages User Experience'
Alongside the feature announcement, Bier criticized certain crypto practices. "I sincerely hope the crypto industry thrives on X, but apps that incentivize spamming, brigading, and harassing random users are not the way," he wrote. "Such behavior damages the experience of millions of users while benefiting only a few." The comment follows his January 15 announcement that X would fully ban so-called 'InfoFi' apps — programs that reward users for mass posting and commenting. Bier said these apps flood the platform with AI-generated garbage.
The ban caused Kaito token to drop 20% and the entire InfoFi sector to lose over 10% of market cap. On-chain sleuth ZachXBT applauded the move, saying "Nikita saved CT (Crypto Twitter)."
Solana First to Respond, CZ Welcomes
Solana Labs quickly confirmed that Smart Cashtags will support Solana ecosystem tokens, letting users view charts and info directly on X. Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) also publicly welcomed the feature. With X's 600 million monthly active users, Smart Cashtags could become the largest crypto exposure and trading entry point ever. However, Bier's dual role as Solana advisor sparked criticism about potential conflicts of interest. Elon Musk previously clarified that Bier does not oversee X's content algorithm; separate teams manage each.
