XRP surpassed BNB in market cap to claim the third spot among global cryptocurrencies, with its price breaking $2 for the first time. US spot ETFs saw $13.59 million net inflow on Jan 2, with total inflows reaching $1.18 billion. The asset had briefly reached third place three times in 2025 but failed to hold.

XRP (Ripple) started 2026 with a strong push, overtaking BNB (Binance) to become the third-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, trailing only Bitcoin and Ethereum. Just two days earlier, BNB held the third position. XRP's price crossed $2 on Friday, marking its first time at that level.

ETF Inflows Fuel Price Surge

Investor money continued to flow in. On January 2, U.S. spot XRP ETFs saw a net inflow of $13.59 million. Since their launch, total cumulative inflows have reached $1.18 billion. Analysts point to the ETF channel as a structural buying driver for XRP.

Three Attempts in 2025 to Flip BNB, None Lasted

During 2025, XRP briefly reclaimed the third slot several times following sharp price jumps: $2.83 in January, $3.55 in July, and $2.63 in October. Each rally allowed XRP to temporarily edge ahead of BNB, but the broader crypto market remained negative. The Crypto Fear & Greed Index stayed low at 24, indicating persistent fear. Bearish sentiment increased 20%–30% compared to November, with most traders still cautious.

Earlier in 2025, BNB had overtaken XRP after a strong rally and heightened activity on Binance Chain. The current rebound from XRP signals renewed investor appetite and shifting capital flows as traders reassess top altcoins.

Market Cap Volatility Drives Rapid Rank Changes

Cryptocurrency rankings are determined by market cap, which is highly sensitive to price. Except for Bitcoin and Ethereum, the market caps of major coins like XRP and BNB are very close, meaning small price moves can cause rank changes — sometimes within hours. Short-term traders often chase relative gains: when XRP rises faster than BNB, they sell BNB to buy XRP, amplifying the shift.

For Ripple, flipping BNB is a significant milestone. Starting from a much smaller base, XRP's climb to third reflects growing investor confidence. Once a rank change happens, it immediately attracts attention on social media, potentially drawing new investors and driving short-term price gains. With XRP now ahead of BNB, volatility is likely to increase, offering profit opportunities for some participants.
