Ripple's latest XRP Markets Report, released on January 31, documents a 280% price surge in Q4 2024 for XRP, marking a dramatic rebound from years of perceived market suppression by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The report attributes the rally to a confluence of regulatory easing, institutional demand, and the election of President Donald Trump, who signed a crypto-friendly executive order shortly after taking office.

From SEC Overhang to 280% Rally

The report notes that XRP, once the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, had been held back by SEC litigation and regulatory uncertainty. But in Q4, trading volumes exploded on major exchanges such as Binance, Upbit Korea, and Coinbase. "After years of market manipulation by the SEC, XRP rebounded as the regulatory overhang eased," Ripple stated, citing the surge as evidence of pent-up demand unleashing.

U.S. Regulatory Transformation

The quarter saw seismic changes in U.S. crypto policy. President Trump's executive order promoted stablecoin development, banking access for crypto firms, and clearer regulatory guidelines. The SEC repealed Staff Accounting Bulletin 121 (SAB 121), which had made it costly for banks to custody digital assets. SEC Chair Gary Gensler resigned, replaced by acting Chair Mark Uyeda, who has signaled a more innovation-friendly approach. Ripple characterized these as "a shift toward a more supportive regulatory environment."

ETF Race Heats Up: Five Filers in Q4

Institutional appetite for XRP exposure surged as five asset managers—WisdomTree, Coinshares, Bitwise, Canary Capital, and 21 Shares—filed S-1 registrations for spot XRP ETFs with the SEC. CEO Brad Garlinghouse highlighted on X: "Q4 2024 was absolutely one for the XRP history books. Five different firms filed for XRP-related ETPs in the U.S. (plus four more this month); RLUSD launched, hitting a $100M market cap within a month; and on-chain XRPL DEX trading volume reached $1B in Q4!"

Legal Battle: SEC Appeals, Ripple Prepares Response

Despite the thaw, the SEC filed its appeal on January 15, 2025, contesting the earlier court ruling that partially favored Ripple. Ripple called the appeal a "reiteration of arguments already rejected" and will file a formal response by April 16. Market observers expect the new SEC leadership to eventually settle the case, removing the last major legal cloud over XRP.

Global Momentum: MiCA, Asia, and XRPL Growth

Beyond the U.S., Europe's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework came into full effect, while Hong Kong and South Korea advanced their own crypto regulations. The XRP Ledger (XRPL) itself saw surging transaction volumes, a record number of new wallets created, and increased institutional adoption. Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin, designed for cross-border payments and DeFi, reached a $100 million market cap within its first month. Meanwhile, tokenization of real-world assets on XRPL gained traction. The report concludes that XRP is well-positioned for sustained growth amid a global regulatory landscape that is finally shifting from confrontation to collaboration.
