Ripple's XRP token surged to $1.09 on April 6, 2021, marking its first time above the $1 mark in nearly three years. The rally saw the token more than double in value from around $0.55 just seven days earlier, before pulling back to trade near $0.90 at the time of writing. The sharp price increase coincided with a broader altcoin rally that pushed several tokens to new all-time highs.

Defying the SEC Lawsuit

The price surge is particularly remarkable given the ongoing legal battle between Ripple Labs and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In late December 2020, the SEC filed a lawsuit against Ripple, accusing the fintech firm of selling unregistered securities in the form of XRP tokens. The announcement triggered a steep sell-off: XRP crashed from $0.55 on December 19 to as low as $0.22 on December 29. Several major cryptocurrency exchanges also delisted the token amid regulatory uncertainty.

Despite these headwinds, XRP has staged a strong recovery. A U.S. court recently blocked an attempt by the SEC to prevent XRP holders from intervening in the case, a procedural win that boosted market sentiment. Between March 31 and April 6, the token rose from $0.55 to $1.09, erasing almost all losses suffered since the lawsuit was filed.

Market Cap Milestone

With the price surge, XRP's market capitalization climbed to approximately $41 billion, securing its position as the fourth largest cryptocurrency by market cap, trailing only Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Binance Coin (BNB). This ranking reflects renewed investor confidence in XRP's utility and potential, even as the SEC case remains unresolved.

However, some analysts caution that the altcoin rally may be overheated, and XRP could face short-term volatility. At press time, the token was trading at $0.90, off its intraday peak. The coming weeks will likely see price action closely tied to developments in the Ripple-SEC litigation and overall market sentiment.
