A new proposal on the Zcash community forum is calling for the network’s current development fund to be terminated before its scheduled expiration in November 2028. The post was written by joshs, the original proposer of ZIP-1016, the model that governs the current fund. Under the existing structure, 20% of each block reward is directed to the development fund. Of that amount, 12% goes to the Coinholder Fund, where coinholders vote each quarter on retroactive grants, while 8% goes to the Zcash Community Grants committee, or ZCG, which is made up of five community-elected members. The two funding streams together are valued at more than $300 million. The post was framed as a response to another proposal that would remove ZCG while keeping the Coinholder Fund. According to the author, that alternative amounts to a compromise rather than a full change. The latest proposal has not entered a voting process and remains at the community discussion stage.

ChainCatcher reported that joshs, the original proposer of Zcash’s current development fund model, ZIP-1016, has posted on the Zcash community forum to suggest ending the development fund before its scheduled expiry in November 2028.

Under the current arrangement, the development fund receives 20% of each block reward. Of that share, 12% goes to the Coinholder Fund, where coinholders vote each quarter to distribute retroactive grants. Another 8% goes to the Zcash Community Grants committee, or ZCG, which consists of five community-elected members.

The combined value of the two funding streams is more than $300 million. Under the current rules, once the development fund expires, the full block reward would go to miners.

The proposal was presented as a response to another plan that would eliminate ZCG while keeping the Coinholder Fund. The author said that approach is only a compromise. The proposal is still under community discussion and has not yet entered the voting process.
