On May 11, privacy coin Zcash (ZEC) fell to $550, pulling back from a near-$640 peak on May 9. Despite a roughly 7% daily decline, the token has surged 33% over the past seven days since breaking above $420 on May 4. Its market cap remains near $10 billion, solidifying its position as the top privacy coin.
Short-Term Pullback, Broader Uptrend Intact
Market data shows ZEC hit $638 on May 9 before reversing. By 11 a.m. EST on May 11, it dropped to $550, then recovered slightly to $555. The dip did not erase most gains from May 4, when ZEC catapulted from below $420 to $600 in under 24 hours. Although it briefly slipped below $550 the next day, the coin largely held above that level, leading proponents to predict a parabolic rally similar to Q4 2025.
Governance Turmoil Meets Institutional Backing
Zcash’s revival comes after a turbulent start to 2026, marked by the mass resignation of its development team over a governance dispute with the Bootstrap board. The resignations triggered a sell-off pushing ZEC below $400. Josh Swihart, founder of the newly formed Zcash Open Development Lab (formerly Electric Coin Company), sees the recent price action as validation of protocol changes. He highlighted $25 million in funding from a16z, Paradigm, Winklevoss Capital, Coinbase Ventures, Cypherpunk Technologies, and Maelstrom as evidence of investor support.
Critics on social media, however, contend that the core issues behind the January resignations persist. One X user argued: “ZEC isn’t private anyway — only 30% of the supply sits in the shielded pool. The other 70% is transparent, allowing chain analytics to link flows via turnstile crossings.” Others warn that ZEC’s recent vertical moves resemble a warning shot rather than sustained strength.
2026 Privacy Narrative Resurges
Privacy coins have regained traction in 2026. Zcash briefly overtook Monero by market cap on May 6, surging 40% to top $600. While pullbacks are natural, traders are positioning for another leg higher if ZEC defends the $550 support. A breach could target $700 next, though concerns about low shielded pool liquidity and governance fragility may cap upside potential.
