Privacy-focused cryptocurrency Zcash (ZEC) surged nearly 15% in the past 24 hours, trading at $655 at press time and becoming one of the best-performing large-cap digital assets. The rally was ignited by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission officially closing its multi-year probe into the Zcash Foundation with no penalties or enforcement recommendations.
SEC Closes Probe, ETF Filing Gears Up
The regulatory cloud that had loomed over Zcash since 2023 finally lifted, triggering aggressive buying across spot and derivatives markets. Trading volume spiked as ZEC broke through several key resistance levels that had capped upside for months. Separately, Grayscale Investments' push to convert its Zcash Trust into a spot Zcash ETF on NYSE Arca is gaining momentum. Market participants now see the SEC's decision as dramatically improving approval odds for what could become the first regulated institutional vehicle focused on a privacy coin.
Institutions Gobble Up Nearly 2% of Circulating Supply
Institutional accumulation has accelerated noticeably in recent weeks. Nasdaq-listed Cypherpunk Technologies disclosed holding 314,185 ZEC — roughly 1.9% of circulating supply. The firm also committed $5 million to the Zcash Open Development Labs initiative alongside heavyweights like a16z and Coinbase Ventures.
Meanwhile, crypto hedge fund Multicoin Capital revealed a large long ZEC position. Co-founder Tushar Jain called Zcash “an unseizable and private store of value” and argued demand for privacy assets will rise amid growing surveillance concerns and wealth taxation debates. The sudden wave of institutional hoarding has intensified supply scarcity fears. Zcash already has a relatively thin liquid float, and exchange reserves are shrinking as funds and public companies accumulate.
Daily Chart Confirms Classic Bull Flag, Moving Averages Align Bullishly
On the daily chart, ZEC rocketed from below $250 in April to nearly $640 in early May, then consolidated inside a descending parallel channel — a textbook bull flag. Buyers defended the 20-day moving average near $545, and ZEC broke above the flag's upper boundary on heavy volume, confirming trend continuation.
All major moving averages (20-day, 50-day, 100-day, 200-day) are stacked in bullish alignment, with the token trading well above each. A golden cross formed earlier this month, when short-term MAs crossed above long-term ones. Historically, such setups often precede extended momentum rallies in high-beta crypto assets. The MACD indicator remains positive above its signal line, suggesting buyers maintain control. However, KuCoin technical data shows the RSI hovering near 70, entering overbought territory. While elevated RSI readings can signal short-term pullbacks, they also frequently appear during the strongest phases of breakout surges.
$700 Barrier in Sight, Measured Target at $745
Traders are now focusing on the $692 to $700 resistance zone — the last major hurdle before a move toward the mid-$700s. Derived from the bull flag's measured move, a decisive daily close above $692 would project a next target near $745. The psychological importance of $700 could amplify volatility in coming sessions as bulls and square off against profit-takers.
On-chain supply dynamics further support the bullish case. With Cypherpunk holding nearly 2% of circulating supply and hedge funds reportedly accumulating aggressively, a supply squeeze is becoming a real possibility if demand continues to rise. Analysts caution that volatility may stay elevated after such a rapid rally. ZEC has historically seen sharp swings during breakout cycles, especially when momentum indicators become overheated. A failure to hold above the former breakout zone near $545 would invalidate the current bullish structure and could trigger a deeper retracement toward the 50-day moving average at $415. So far, bulls have defended every pullback during this uptrend. The broader crypto environment — particularly Bitcoin's strength and altcoin risk appetite — will also influence whether Zcash clears $700. For now, the technical and fundamental backdrop remains firmly tilted in favor of the bulls: regulatory relief, institutional accumulation, ETF speculation, and a confirmed bull flag breakout have turned Zcash from one of the market's quietest large-caps into its strongest momentum trade.
