Zooko Wilcox, the founder and longtime CEO of Electric Coin Co., the entity behind the privacy-focused cryptocurrency Zcash, announced on Dec. 18 that he is officially stepping down after an eight-year tenure. In his resignation statement, Wilcox said that while he has lived out a science fiction dream in reality, the conflation of Zcash with his own identity is neither healthy for him nor for Zcash. He expressed confidence in his successor, Josh Swihart, who will take over as CEO immediately.
A Calculated Farewell
Wilcox acknowledged past disagreements with Swihart but underscored his belief in Swihart’s ability to steer the company forward. “Zcash’s role in human history is much bigger than any individual,” Wilcox stated, explaining the necessity of his departure for the project’s long-term health.
Continued Commitment to Freedom
Despite leaving the top executive role, Wilcox emphasized his unwavering dedication to human freedom. “Anything I do now must include Zcash, because the Zcash community is freedom’s best hope,” he said. Electric Coin Co. confirmed that Wilcox will retain his position as a director on the board of the Bootstrap Project, the parent company of ECC.
Analyst Reaction: Zcash’s Struggles Persist
Tuur Demeester, founder of Adamant Research, responded to the news by sharing a chart on X depicting ZEC’s gradual decline since its 2018 peak. He also referenced a 2018 ad-hoc analysis of Zcash’s investor conference call, which flagged fundamental issues—including Wilcox’s inability to clearly articulate plans and questionable claims about the lack of hard forks and privacy impact. Demeester indicated these problems remain unresolved.
The leadership change marks a new chapter for Zcash. Investors and community members will watch closely to see whether Swihart can reverse the token’s price trajectory and restore confidence in the privacy coin.
