U.S. stocks close lower as Nasdaq drops more than 2%, crypto-related shares split

U.S. stocks ended the session lower, with all three major indexes in the red and the Nasdaq posting the sharpest decline. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.97% and was down 1.13% for July, while the S&P 500 lost 1.21% on the day and 1.00% for the month. The Nasdaq dropped 2.15%, bringing its July decline to 3.47%. Gold- and silver-linked names also sold off broadly. First Majestic Silver (AG) fell 4.94%, Coeur Mining (CDE) lost 3.76%, the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) dropped 3.47%, VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX) fell 2.19%, SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) declined 2.00%, and Barrick Gold (GOLD) slipped 1.72%. Crypto-related stocks showed mixed performance. Hut 8 (HUT), Cipher Mining (CIFR), MARA Holdings (MARA), Riot Platforms (RIOT), and CleanSpark (CLSK) all advanced. On the losing side, Strategy (MSTR), Bitmine (BMNR), Circle (CRCL), Bit Brother (BTBT), and Coinbase (COIN) finished lower.
