The Open Standard stablecoin alliance has announced Open USD, a new stablecoin designed for global money movement, addressing key challenges faced by businesses in scaling stablecoin usage: high mint/redeem fees, lack of reserve earnings participation, and centralized governance. Open USD introduces three core design principles: zero-cost, unlimited-volume minting and redemption; default yield pass-through to partners (minus a small management fee); and collaborative governance via an independent board composed of partners. Over 140 companies have signed up, including Visa, Stripe, Mastercard, American Express, BlackRock, BNY, Standard Chartered, Coinbase, Shopify, DoorDash, Google, Samsung, and many more across payments, banking, technology, and crypto. Open USD is expected to go live later this year, aiming to become the default infrastructure for internet-native value transfer.
