Crypto token buybacks hit a record $638 million, with nearly 90% coming from Hyperliquid and Pump.fun

Crypto projects have spent a record $638 million on token buybacks in 2026 through Aug. 31, according to figures cited in the report, but the headline number is heavily concentrated. Roughly 90% of that total came from just two platforms: perpetuals exchange Hyperliquid and memecoin launchpad Pump.fun. The data points to a real shift in tokenomics, with projects trying to tie token value to operating revenue instead of ongoing issuance, yet the underlying cash flows still come largely from trading activity. The report also argues that buybacks alone do not guarantee shrinking supply. Tokenomist’s figures show that once new unlocks are included, only BNB and RAY are in net deflation among 27 tracked tokens. HYPE’s annualized supply is still rising about 47%, while PUMP is up 14% and KAITO is close to 100%. Elsewhere, Ethena’s proposal to direct 95% of protocol net revenue to ENA buybacks passed with 17.6 million votes in favor and zero against, though it will not activate unless USDe supply returns to $7.5 billion from the current $4.12 billion. Solana’s first on-chain governance vote also highlighted the same math problem: slower issuance and higher burns do not necessarily produce net supply contraction.

Blockworks study says 95% of tokens underperformed Bitcoin and 73% eventually fell more than 90%

A market-wide study by Blockworks researcher Carlos found that very few crypto tokens delivered returns better than Bitcoin once they reached meaningful secondary-market scale. Looking at 2,114 tokens that hit at least a $50 million circulating market cap at a month-end between January 2020 and June 2026, the report says only 4.1% outperformed Bitcoin over their respective observation windows. Among tokens with at least 24 months of history, that share fell to 1.7%. The study also points to deep losses across the broader token universe. Median returns from the qualification point were down 97%, and 73% of qualifying tokens eventually suffered a drawdown of 90% or more. Carlos argues that token issuance expanded sharply over the past several years, but liquidity and fundamentals did not keep pace. The result, according to the report, is a market with a widening base of small tokens and a shrinking top tier of large-cap assets. The paper also finds that the 2020-2021 altcoin boom did not persist as a durable pattern. After 2022, high momentum and high volatility were associated with weaker subsequent performance, especially among mid- and small-cap tokens. Long-term winners against Bitcoin were concentrated in exchange tokens such as BNB, OKB, GT, LEO, BGB, WBT and MX, with CAKE the only qualifying DEX token, a group the report says shares one trait: fee income linked to buybacks and burns.

Blockworks Research says only 4.1% of tokens outperformed Bitcoin

A report from Blockworks Research found that only 4.1% of 1,972 tokens that first crossed a $50 million circulating market cap between January 2020 and December 2025 had outperformed Bitcoin as of June 2026. Among tokens with at least 24 months of price history, the share fell to 1.7%. The study also said the median token in the full sample had lost 97% since entering the dataset. According to the report, the token market now shows a pyramid structure with a broader base and a thinner top. The number of tokens with market caps above $1 million reached a record 3,648 in December 2024, while the cohort above $250 million has kept shrinking since peaking at 279 tokens in November 2021, falling to 102 by June 2026. The report added that of the 187 tokens that beat Bitcoin during the 2020-2021 bull market, 86.1% later dropped at least 90% from their November 2021 highs, and only OKB continued to outperform Bitcoin. It also found that exchange tokens were the only group meaningfully overrepresented among long-term Bitcoin outperformers, including BNB, OKB, GT, LEO, BGB, WBT, MX and CAKE.

Bitget upgrades BGBTC with Gauntlet oversight, Chainlink CCIP, and new yield features

Bitget has announced a broad upgrade to BGBTC, adding daily BTC-denominated yield, fast large-amount redemptions, and institutional-grade risk management. The update also introduces an independent curator structure, with DeFi risk management firm Gauntlet overseeing underlying yield strategies and handling risk supervision. Bitget said the added review layer sits alongside custody arrangements and is designed to strengthen portfolio monitoring, risk controls, and the long-term sustainability of returns. BGBTC now supports yield strategy deployment on the Morph blockchain, expanding its multichain yield routes and potential use cases. On the infrastructure side, Bitget is using Chainlink Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol, or CCIP, as BGBTC’s official cross-chain solution, while continuing to rely on Chainlink Proof of Reserve to provide real-time transparency and verifiable reserve backing for its 1:1 Bitcoin peg. Even after the upgrade, BGBTC can still be used for futures margin, loan collateral, and participation in Launchpool and PoolX, allowing holders to pursue yield while keeping capital more flexible.
