Weekly crypto calendar: Shanghai blockchain summit opens as Plasma unlock worth about $158 million looms

The coming week brings a dense lineup of crypto market, policy, exchange, and token-unlock events. On Sept. 23, Wanxiang Blockchain Labs will host the 12th Global Blockchain Summit in Shanghai as part of Shanghai Blockchain International Week. The same day, BitMEX is set to shut down at 12:00 Beijing time after its parent board decided to close the exchange following a strategic review. Several exchange and product changes are also scheduled. Binance will delist Pax Dollar (USDP) spot pairs and end related services on Sept. 24, while Coinbase plans to suspend trading in IoTeX (IOTX). Binance is also supporting Stargate Finance’s STG token merger into LayerZero’s ZRO, including the removal of STG perpetual contracts. On the infrastructure and policy side, the Eurosystem’s DLT settlement project Pontes is due to go live on Sept. 21, with the European Central Bank framing it as an operational service rather than another pilot. Thailand’s SEC will close public consultation on a proposed stablecoin rule on Sept. 25. Token unlocks are another focal point. Plasma (XPL) is scheduled to unlock about 1.76 billion tokens on Sept. 25, equal to roughly 63.20% of circulating supply and valued at about $158 million. Humanity Protocol (H), Big Time (BIGTIME), SoSoValue (SOSO), SPACE ID (ID), MBG, SOON, and STBL are also on the calendar.

A packed calendar is lined up for Sept. 21-27, with several crypto market deadlines and product changes already scheduled. Moscow Exchange is set to launch crypto index perpetual futures tied to BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP and TRX on Sept. 22, offering cash-settled contracts priced in U.S. dollars and settled in rubles for qualified investors only. The same day also marks the deadline for The Sandbox’s SAND compensation claims tied to the Aug. 22 Base and BNB Chain bridge attack, while Zilliqa is expected to trigger its second exchange migration hard fork. On Sept. 23, BitMEX is due to shut down at 12:00 Beijing time after halting new user registrations, with remaining positions to be forcibly closed after the deadline. Sept. 24 brings another set of changes: Phantom will stop supporting Sui, Binance will delist all USDP spot pairs, and Coinbase will suspend trading in IoTeX (IOTX) across several services. On Sept. 25, oracle project Switchboard plans to end operations and terminate remaining support, while Binance Futures is scheduled to list next-quarter 0326 delivery contracts. The week also includes a series of public appearances by Federal Reserve officials, including John Williams, Philip Jefferson, Austan Goolsbee and Thomas Barkin.

Celsius sues BitMEX affiliates for 6,360 BTC days before the exchange shuts down

Celsius Network’s bankruptcy estate has filed suit against five BitMEX-linked entities in the U.S., seeking the return of about 6,360.1666 BTC liquidated during the March 2020 market crash. The complaint was filed on Sept. 12 through litigation manager Blockchain Recovery Investment Consortium, according to records from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Celsius argues that BitMEX’s liquidation setup created a conflict because the exchange controlled the pricing trigger, the liquidation engine, and an insurance fund that received part of the liquidated assets. The filing says one Celsius leveraged position lost about 1,325.84 BTC on March 12, 2020, while investment fund JST lost about 5,034.33 BTC the next day. JST later assigned its claims to the Celsius estate. Using a Sept. 18 Bitcoin price of about $77,195 from CoinMarketCap, the disputed amount is worth roughly $491 million. The lawsuit also points to BitMEX’s March 13, 2020 service disruption, which the exchange attributed at the time to a DDoS attack. Celsius says selling pressure eased once the liquidation engine paused, though that remains an allegation rather than a court finding. BitMEX has already said it will end all trading services at 04:00 UTC on Sept. 23 after announcing the exchange shutdown in July.

Arthur Hayes says Clarity Act would hurt Bitcoin and U.S. crypto innovation

BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes said in a post on X that the U.S. Clarity Act is not helpful to genuine innovation in the American crypto sector or to building products that match market demand. He argued that Bitcoin has never needed such legislation since its launch in 2009 and will not need it in the future. Hayes also said regulatory legislation should not be treated as a prerequisite that limits industry development or product creation. The remarks were reported by Odaily in a brief news update.

Arthur Hayes says an AI-first endgame still leads to money printing and more liquidity

BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes said a break in demand for AI compute would ultimately force policymakers back to money printing. In his view, the current idea of putting 「AI safety first」leaves only two real paths. One is for the U.S. government to step in and take over the role now played by buyers such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX, continuing to support demand for data centers and chip orders. The other is for those buyers to disappear, causing debt tied to the AI buildout to blow up, with insurers taking the first hit and the Federal Reserve printing money to rescue them if losses become too large. Hayes said the conclusion is the same either way. Whether the response comes through a fiscal route or a monetary one, liquidity would be released, and risk assets would benefit in the end. The comments were reported by BlockBeats on Sept. 13.

Crypto billionaires give Reform UK £72 million in two days as scrutiny over party funding grows

Reform UK has received £72 million ($97 million) from two crypto-linked billionaires in the space of two days, a sum that exceeds the total raised by all British political parties last year combined. BitMEX co-founder Ben Delo first announced a £36 million contribution in The Telegraph on Friday, calling for support through the latest possible election date in 2029 and paying the full amount up front in case the government limits large donations. On Saturday, Thailand-based Tether investor Christopher Harborne matched that amount after having already given Reform £15 million since the last election. The party said the money would help fund policy work and 400 campaign managers. None of the recent or earlier donations from either man were made in crypto, after Britain banned crypto political donations in March. The gifts also arrive while the UK government considers tighter election funding rules and while Reform faces a criminal investigation into its funding, though not over these two donations.

Bybit launches USDT-settled forex perpetuals with up to 100x leverage

Crypto exchange Bybit has introduced USDT-settled forex perpetual contracts tied to three major currency pairs: EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/JPY. The contracts offer up to 100x leverage and trade on a 24/7 basis. The new listings sit under Bybit’s TradFi perpetuals lineup, which the exchange said has expanded to more than 200 assets since its launch in April 2026, including stocks, commodities, ETFs and pre-listing companies. The move adds foreign exchange exposure to a product suite that already spans several traditional finance categories. ChainCatcher’s report also cited Bank for International Settlements data showing that the global foreign exchange market recorded $9.6 trillion in average daily over-the-counter turnover in April 2025, making it the world’s largest and most liquid financial market. Bybit is not the first crypto venue to enter this segment. Kraken rolled out five forex perpetual contracts in April 2025 with up to 50x leverage, while BitMEX launched six similar products in April 2026, each offering leverage of up to 100x.
