BitMEX and BitMart shutdowns put proof-of-reserves back at the center as users reassess exchange risk

Two exchange shutdown announcements in one week and a separate wallet depletion case in Europe have pushed a familiar question back to the front of the crypto market: are customer assets really still sitting on the exchange? BitMEX said on July 23 that it will shut its platform on Sept. 23 and stop new user registrations immediately, ending an 11-year run. Three days later, BitMart said it had begun an orderly liquidation, will halt all trading on Aug. 26, and expects to complete the process by Jan. 31, 2027. Its exchange token BMX fell 81.5% over the week following the announcement. The article also points to Zondacrypto, where a hot wallet’s BTC balance fell from 55.7 BTC to 0.086 BTC in April 2026, a 99.7% drop, while the platform continued to claim solvency. Around 30,000 users were affected. Against that backdrop, the report lays out what a complete proof-of-reserves system should include, why Merkle tree-based verification matters, where snapshot-based disclosures fall short, and how exchanges including Binance, OKX, Kraken and Ourbit approach reserves verification, audits and security disclosures.

BitMEX’s rise and decline: perpetual swaps, the March 12 outage, and the user migration to Bybit

WuBlockchain’s latest podcast revisits BitMEX through a conversation with hedge fund manager Kuange, who described how the exchange helped turn perpetual swaps into a workable crypto market structure and later lost its edge under regulatory pressure, slow product changes, and weaker operations. He said BitMEX solved key problems in early crypto derivatives by combining perpetual contracts with funding rates, mark prices, insurance funds, and auto-deleveraging, allowing liquidity to gather in one market and making the platform a major venue for price discovery during the bear market. The discussion also covered the March 12, 2020 crash, when BitMEX briefly went offline as Bitcoin stopped falling near $3,800. Kuange said the outage objectively interrupted cascading liquidations, though whether it was intentional cannot be proven from the outside. He also argued that inverse contracts, which used Bitcoin as collateral, made long positions particularly vulnerable because traders were hit by position losses, falling collateral value, and amplified loss ratios at the same time. In his account, BitMEX then lost users as regional restrictions tightened, withdrawals remained cumbersome, and the market shifted from BTC-margined inverse contracts to USDT-margined products. Bybit benefited by closely copying BitMEX’s early interface and product design, then moving faster into spot, wealth products, and a broader exchange model. Kuange said the era in which offshore exchanges expanded mainly through regulatory arbitrage has largely passed, while perpetual swaps still need work in small-cap markets where extreme funding rates and manipulation can distort hedging and price discovery.

ARK analyst says crypto is entering its biggest consolidation phase on record as exchange closures begin

ARK Invest researcher Lorenzo Valente says the crypto industry is moving into what he describes as the largest consolidation phase on record, with revenue and investor attention clustering around a small group of leading protocols. Data cited by Valente shows that perpetuals exchange Hyperliquid and meme coin launch platform Pump.fun account for about 67% of total crypto app revenue. Adding synthetic dollar protocol Ethena lifts the combined share of the top three protocols to nearly 80%. Valente argued that this concentration reflects a broader shift in market structure. In his view, investors are becoming more selective, while projects and exchanges without product-market fit are losing their ability to attract capital. He expects the trend to speed up in the coming months, bringing more mergers, acquisitions, bankruptcies, liquidations, and shutdowns. Recent exchange closures are presented as early evidence. BitMEX said it will shut its trading platform in September after more than five years of operation, while BitMart said trading services will stop on Aug. 26, with a full shutdown expected in January 2027. The report also points to Bybit’s acquisition of Indonesian digital asset company NOBI earlier this month as another sign that consolidation is extending beyond closures into M&A.

New Huo Technology Research says crypto is showing resilience as oil and Treasury yields climb

New Huo Technology Research said the crypto market showed notable resilience last week even as macro stress intensified across global markets. Brent crude rose above $100 a barrel for the first time since 2022, the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield moved past 4.7%, and the so-called Magnificent Seven lost a combined $800 billion in a single day. In the report, the institute pointed to the escalation in the U.S.-Iran conflict, changing expectations for Federal Reserve policy, and still-hot labor data as the main forces pressuring risk assets. Market pricing for a July FOMC hike was put at about 40%, while the odds of a September move were also rising. On the industry side, the report highlighted Goldman Sachs CEO support for the Clarity Act, the launch of a new crypto index by S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera, and BitMEX’s planned shutdown by Sept. 23. It also noted that spot Bitcoin ETFs saw a combined $450 million in net outflows over two days, while ETH ETFs were relatively steadier, with just $7 million in net outflows on Friday. Technically, the report said Bitcoin remains above its daily EMA30 and is testing resistance near $65,500 and $68,800, with key support at $64,300 and $62,000.
