Solo developer rebuilds Warcraft III’s Nobunaga map into a standalone 5v5 MOBA

A solo developer named sochaksum has rebuilt Nobunaga’s Ambition, a long-running custom map from Warcraft III, into a standalone 5v5 MOBA and shared gameplay footage on Threads. According to BlockTempo, the post published on Sept. 4 had reached 472,000 views, 9,800 likes, and 11,700 reposts by Sept. 9, despite the account having only 2,357 followers. The footage shows an "experience version v0.1.0" that can already connect to a Japan server and complete 5v5 ranked matches. The interface includes casual and ranked play, friends, team functions, match history, and settings. BlockTempo’s frame-by-frame review also noted a ranking system, reconnect support, anti-map-hack handling on the server side, custom hotkeys, and language support for Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, English, Japanese, and Korean. Match length has been reduced to 30 to 40 minutes. Still, the project faces two clear hurdles before any release. Blizzard’s user terms say custom games remain Blizzard’s exclusive property, while "Nobunaga’s Ambition" is a registered trademark owned by Koei Tecmo. As of Sept. 9, BlockTempo said it could not find any related Steam page, and the developer has not disclosed an official title or release schedule.

OpenAI says Russia-linked network used ChatGPT to pose as academic experts

OpenAI said Wednesday that it shut down a group of accounts tied to a network originating in Russia that used ChatGPT to promote an organization presenting itself as an academic institute. According to the company, the operators relied on Russian-language prompts to generate mostly English social media posts and comments, and also instructed the chatbot to hide signs that the content came from Russia. OpenAI said the group accessed ChatGPT through VPNs because the service is unavailable in Russia. The campaign promoted the International Burke Institute, which described itself as an Israel-based expert group. OpenAI reviewed 36 articles on the institute’s website and found that 34 had been copied, with some attributed to academics who did not write them. The company cited one article on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor that appeared to be copied from a Cambridge University Press original but was wrongly credited to a University of Nottingham professor whose expertise is South Asian politics. OpenAI said the campaign appeared to reach relatively small audiences, but called its structure unusually elaborate compared with other Russia-linked operations it has disrupted since the war in Ukraine began. The company did not attribute the IBI campaign to the Russian government and said the role of some people in Israel who may have represented the institute remains unclear.

US tech layoffs near 140,000 this year as four giants plan $725 billion in AI spending

New data cited by the Financial Times and Challenger, Gray and Christmas shows the US technology sector has accounted for more than one-third of all announced layoffs in the country so far in 2026. Amazon, Oracle, Meta, and Microsoft alone have cut nearly 50,000 jobs, roughly 6% of their combined workforce. At the same time, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft are expected to spend as much as $725 billion this year on AI infrastructure, including data centers. Oracle’s headcount fell by 21,000 for the year after layoffs in March, and S&P lowered the company’s credit rating this month, citing weak cash flow and uncertainty over AI returns. Microsoft cut 4,800 roles this month, mainly in its Xbox gaming unit, in what the report described as a broad reset following its $75 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard three years ago. The report also noted that academics have questioned the idea that AI is the main driver of these job cuts. UC Berkeley economist Enrico Moretti said AI-related layoffs often serve as a cover for correcting overhiring during the pandemic. Market performance has also failed to support the narrative: companies that blamed layoffs on AI underperformed the Nasdaq by nearly 10% over the following 30 trading days, versus about 4% for firms citing other reasons.

Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass bet runs into weak growth, 3% margins and fresh cuts

Microsoft’s push to turn Xbox into a subscription-led gaming business is running into a hard financial reality. After spending more than $80 billion to acquire ZeniMax Media and Activision Blizzard, the company folded major franchises including Call of Duty, Fallout, Doom, World of Warcraft and Candy Crush into its broader Xbox content strategy, aiming to make Game Pass a lower-cost gateway to premium titles. But according to ABMedia, citing analysis from The Wall Street Journal, that strategy has fallen short of expectations. By placing major releases into the subscription service, including flagship titles on day one, Microsoft weakened the traditional retail sales model that had previously generated large amounts of revenue from hit games. The report says Xbox’s overall profit margin fell to just 3%. User growth has also lagged. Microsoft had expected the service to reach 77 million subscribers this year, but the current figure is only close to half that target. A price increase for the top-tier plan, from $19.99 to $29.99 per month, triggered notable churn in a short period, prompting a reassessment of pricing. Xbox has also cut nearly 3,200 jobs and shut down five game studios. Microsoft has since appointed Asha Sharma as Xbox’s new CEO and is adjusting both distribution and pricing strategy, including a move away from putting hot titles into the subscription library on launch day.
