OpenAI launches Dots, but neither dot.com nor dots.com is under its control

OpenAI unveiled its persistent agent, Dots, at DevDay, but the most obvious .com domains tied to the product are not owned by the company. The sharper detail is dot.com: it is currently held by xAI, and the domain redirects visitors straight to Grok Bot. The other natural match, dots.com, also does not belong to OpenAI. Public WHOIS records show dot.com changed hands in July this year, roughly two months before Dots was formally introduced. That timing quickly fueled speculation in the community that xAI may have moved early to secure the name. Still, there is no evidence showing xAI knew in advance that OpenAI would use Dots as a product name. The history of dots.com is older and stranger. The domain originally belonged to the U.S. women’s apparel chain Dots. When the company went through bankruptcy liquidation in 2014, the domain was sold for $335,000 to an unidentified individual buyer. Since then, the actual holder has not been publicly confirmed. As a result, OpenAI has launched Dots without control of either of the two most intuitive .com entry points, and one of them is already sending traffic to a rival product.

OpenAI unveils dots, GPT-6.1 Sol, ChatGPT Space and a $500 Pro 500 tier at DevDay

OpenAI used its DevDay event at Fort Mason in San Francisco to roll out a broad set of product and platform updates, headlined by dots, a 24/7 online agent with its own cloud computer. According to the event presentation and the MarsBit report citing WeChat account New Intelligence, dots can run tasks in the background, access a browser, connect with more than 4,000 tools, and integrate with Slack and Teams. OpenAI said Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise users can create their first dot, and dot conversations will not count against ChatGPT usage quotas. The company also introduced ChatGPT Space as a collaborative workspace for humans and agents, launched GPT-6.1 Sol as its next flagship model, and added an Ultrafast inference mode that OpenAI said runs at roughly 300 tokens per second, or eight times the standard mode. Pricing for GPT-6.1 Sol was listed at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, versus Astra at $10 and $50. OpenAI also restarted its $200 Pro subscription and added a new $500 Pro 500 plan, which the report said offers 25 times the usage of ChatGPT Plus and native access to Ultrafast without a five-hour cap. Developer-facing releases included a cloud version of Codex, updates to Codex CLI, a desktop code review feature, Codex Security Cloud, Agents API and Decisions API.

OpenAI launches always-on agent Dots, opening access to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users

OpenAI introduced Dots during the keynote at Developer Day 2026, presenting it as an always-on AI agent that can run in the background, connect with apps, and carry out tasks on a user’s behalf. The company said Dots can handle "almost anything" and learn a user’s preferences over time. Powered by the GPT-6Astra model, the product runs in its own cloud computing environment and can access a web browser along with more than 4,000 supported applications. Users can interact with Dots through a text-message-style interface or by voice through ChatGPT on the web, desktop, and mobile. OpenAI said the agent can connect with Microsoft Teams and Slack and keep context across different apps and devices. The company also outlined use cases for developers and creators, including building and testing app updates from user feedback, analyzing interview transcripts, finding video clips, and generating show summaries and social media content. For now, each user can create only one Dot. OpenAI said it plans to support multiple agents in the future, while also increasing speed and task capacity. OpenAI’s next personal agent may be called Dots, leaked copy suggests

Leaked unpublished marketing copy shared by M1Astra and ChrisGPT suggests OpenAI may be preparing a new personal agent product called Dots. The material says the agent can carry out tasks on a user’s behalf and be reached through messages, phone calls, Slack, and email. With user approval, it may also be able to make purchases directly. The same copy describes a system in which each Dot runs inside its own virtual machine, with an interface labeled “Your dot’s computer.” It may also request access to a user’s computer, with that access revocable at any time and re-enabled through a desktop app. Other references mention secure browser password storage that would let ChatGPT sign in to websites automatically, as well as a separate 3D avatar for each Dot. The initial rollout is said to be limited to Pro users. The product name is still unclear. A ChatGPT Pro upgrade page briefly showed the phrase “o, your always-on assistant” a few days earlier, and client configuration files reportedly included `o` and `-o` email suffixes. Earlier leaked code also linked Dots with internal names such as Orbit and Aeon. OpenAI has not formally announced the product, so it remains unclear whether o, Dots, and Aeon refer to separate products, internal codenames, or different naming stages for the same release.
