Vercel Labs open-sources agent-desktop for AI control of desktop apps

Vercel Labs has open-sourced agent-desktop, a command-line tool designed to let AI agents control desktop applications across macOS, Windows, and Linux. Instead of relying on screenshots, the tool reads application interfaces through the operating system’s accessibility tree and provides AI agents with JSON snapshots of interactive elements. According to the source, this allows developers to use any coding agent with command-line capabilities to drive native apps without depending on vision models. The tool runs in headless mode by default, meaning it does not move the mouse pointer or steal focus, so users can continue using their computers while an AI agent operates in parallel. MarkTechPost said the tool’s skeleton traversal feature can cut token usage by 78% to 96% in dense Electron applications. Version 1.0.2 was released on Oct. 30, 2026, under the Apache-2.0 license.

DeepSeek Harness desktop app lands in main branch as release work nears completion

DeepSeek Harness’ official desktop client has appeared in the project’s main repository branch, pointing to a likely pre-release phase for the app. The desktop version is built on Electron and packages the existing Harness web interface into a standalone application, removing the need for users to manually run a web service. The codebase already includes build, signing, notarization, auto-update, and upload workflows for both macOS and Windows. Its production update endpoint is also set to download.deepseek.com. Recent commits have focused on packaging fixes, notarization, and startup recovery issues, suggesting the team is working through final release engineering tasks rather than building core functionality from scratch. DeepSeek has not announced a launch date, and no installable package is available on GitHub Releases at this stage. Still, based on the current state of the code referenced in the report, the official desktop version appears to have moved into the final stretch before public release.
