India's USDT Premium Surges Past 8.5% as ED Crackdown Chokes Stablecoin Supply

India's Stablecoin Premium Surges Past 8.5% After ED Crackdown on USDT Cross-Border Channels

India's Enforcement Directorate (ED) has intensified actions against entities using USDT for cross-border fund transfers, causing a sharp supply contraction in the domestic stablecoin market. The USDT premium over the rupee jumped from the usual 3-4% to over 8.5% as of June 28. ED's stance, based on FEMA and PMLA, threatens a well-established remittance corridor that has channeled billions of dollars worth of USDT into India over the past two years. The widening premium reflects risk pricing amid regulatory ambiguity, while India’s Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance is set to meet with RBI and ICAI on July 2 to discuss future VDA regulations. International bodies such as OECD, BIS, and FATF have also highlighted the need for tighter oversight, with FATF reporting that stablecoins accounted for 84% of $154 billion in illicit crypto transactions in 2025.
