US tech companies cut nearly 140,000 jobs in seven months as $725 billion shifts to AI data centers

US tech companies have eliminated nearly 140,000 jobs in the first seven months of 2026, according to a July 27 analysis by the Financial Times, with the sector accounting for more than one-third of all layoffs nationwide. At the same time, hyperscale technology groups are channeling about $725 billion into AI data center construction, linking workforce reductions with one of the biggest capital spending cycles in the industry. The report said Amazon, Oracle, Meta and Microsoft together cut about 50,000 roles. Microsoft announced roughly 4,800 layoffs in early July, mostly in Xbox, while Oracle said in June that it had reduced headcount by 21,000 over the past year. Reuters reported Oracle tied the cuts in its SEC filing to faster AI adoption and a need to reshape its workforce. Other firms have made similar moves. Monday.com told the SEC it would cut about 20% of staff, or more than 600 employees, as part of a restructuring plan tied to an AI-driven growth strategy. GitLab cut about 350 workers in June, more than 14% of its staff, and withdrew from 22 countries to focus resources on AI workloads. The Financial Times said many displaced workers are not leaving tech altogether. Some are moving into AI model training, data labeling and MLOps jobs, while companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI continue to hire.

Visa rolls out stablecoin platform as Injective files SEC transfer agent application

A cluster of crypto and tech developments emerged around July 16. Visa said it is launching the Visa Stablecoin Platform, a system aimed at banks and fintech firms that want to add stablecoin services to existing payment and treasury workflows. The company said it processes about $15 trillion in annual payments, has already settled billions of dollars in stablecoin volume, and wants to extend access to roughly 15,000 financial institution clients and more than 200 million merchants. Injective said it has filed an application with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to register as a transfer agent, part of an effort to move ownership records for securities on-chain. Elsewhere, AI infrastructure startup Fireworks AI announced a $1.5 billion funding round at a $17.5 billion valuation, while 1inch co-founder Anton Bukov said he has left the company’s operating team and started a new blockchain infrastructure project, Second Tier. In Washington, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a non-binding resolution stating that FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried should not receive a presidential pardon or commutation under any circumstances. Base creator Jesse Pollak also outlined a reset in strategy, saying the network will focus in 2026 on trading, payments, and AI agents. South Korea’s central bank raised rates by 25 basis points to 2.75%, and TSMC reported second-quarter net profit of NT$706.6 billion, up 77.4% year over year.
