SparkKitty malware slipped into Apple and Google app stores to steal crypto wallet seed phrases

Security firm Check Point said on July 27 that a cross-platform malware strain called SparkKitty has been distributed through Apple’s App Store, Google Play, and third-party Android app stores. The malware uses optical character recognition, or OCR, to scan images stored in a user’s photo library for crypto wallet seed phrases, passwords, and QR codes. Once installed, the app requests access to photos, keeps scanning both existing and newly added images, and uploads extracted text along with device information to an attacker-controlled server. Check Point described SparkKitty as an upgraded version of the earlier infostealer SparkCat. On iOS, malicious code was found inside a crypto app called “币 coin,” which reportedly used code obfuscation to pass Apple’s review process. On Android, researchers said a chat and crypto trading app called “SOEX” carried the malware and was removed from Google Play only after surpassing 10,000 downloads. The report also said the malware spread through third-party app stores, sideloaded APKs, modified TikTok versions, and entertainment apps. Check Point warned users not to store seed phrases in phone photo galleries and recommended offline backups instead.

At Least 29 Crypto Exchange Apps Blocked From New Installs on Google Play in South Korea

At least 29 overseas cryptocurrency derivatives exchange apps, in addition to OKX and Bybit, can no longer be newly installed from Google Play in South Korea, according to a report cited by PANews from Digital Asset. The affected apps include MEXC, KuCoin, BingX, Gemini, BTCC, Phemex, and Bitmex. In Play Store search results, these apps are shown as unavailable or marked with notices such as “not available in your region of residence.” Of the 29 apps, 14 had previously been identified by South Korea’s Financial Intelligence Unit, or FIU, as unreported virtual asset service providers and referred to law enforcement agencies. Another 15 had not been referred, but were still blocked by Google Play. The report said Google has, since January this year, suspended regional support for apps operated by virtual asset service providers that are not registered with the FIU under its own policies. The Play Store restrictions do not affect access to those exchanges through web browsers or installation via Apple’s App Store.

Google Play in South Korea Removes 29 Overseas Crypto Exchange Apps

At least 29 overseas virtual asset exchange apps can no longer be downloaded or installed from the Google Play Store in South Korea, according to an Odaily report citing Digital Asset. The report said one of the main reasons Korean users turn to overseas exchanges is to access futures and other derivatives trading, which is why the review focused on derivatives platforms. Among the affected platforms, 14 had previously been identified by the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) under South Korea’s Financial Services Commission as unreported virtual asset service providers, or VASPs, and were referred to investigative authorities. The report also said another 15 exchanges were not included on the FIU’s investigation notice list, but their apps were likewise unavailable for installation through Google Play in South Korea. The report did not name the exchanges involved. It only stated that the apps are currently unavailable for download and installation in the South Korean Google Play marketplace.
