Aschenbrenner’s hedge fund buys call options on AI-linked stocks again
Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher, has again bought call options on AI-related companies through his hedge fund, Situational Awareness, according to Techub News, citing BeInCrypto. The positions include AMD, Bloom Energy, CoreWeave and SK Hynix. The move comes after the fund suffered a sharp drawdown in July this year, when a leveraged bet on AI stocks cut its assets from a peak of more than $45 billion to about $10 billion. This time, the report said, the return to call options caps downside at the premium paid for the contracts. Aschenbrenner is known for a 2024 essay that argued AI could reach human-level intelligence by 2027. His portfolio has been built around companies tied to AI computing capacity and power supply. On Friday, the stocks named in the report traded in different directions: Bloom Energy rose nearly 7%, AMD gained nearly 3%, while SanDisk and CoreWeave fell. It remains unclear whether the new options purchases were funded with remaining cash or newly raised capital.
