UK Formally Recognizes Crypto as a Distinct Property Class: A Legal Milestone

The United Kingdom has officially codified crypto assets as a new category of property with the Royal Assent of the Property (Digital Assets etc.) Act 2025. Signed by King Charles III on July 1, the Act creates a third property category separate from 'things in possession' and 'things in action', covering bitcoin, stablecoins, and NFTs. The reform stems from the Law Commission's 2023 recommendation and aims to modernize property law for the digital age. It provides clearer legal footing for theft, fraud, insolvency, and estate cases. Additionally, the UK lifted its four-year ban on retail crypto ETNs earlier this year, with BlackRock launching a fully backed iShares Bitcoin ETP on the London Stock Exchange. The government is also considering a ban on crypto donations to political parties.
