OpenAI launches always-on agent Dots, opening access to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users

OpenAI introduced Dots during the keynote at Developer Day 2026, presenting it as an always-on AI agent that can run in the background, connect with apps, and carry out tasks on a user’s behalf. The company said Dots can handle "almost anything" and learn a user’s preferences over time. Powered by the GPT-6Astra model, the product runs in its own cloud computing environment and can access a web browser along with more than 4,000 supported applications. Users can interact with Dots through a text-message-style interface or by voice through ChatGPT on the web, desktop, and mobile. OpenAI said the agent can connect with Microsoft Teams and Slack and keep context across different apps and devices. The company also outlined use cases for developers and creators, including building and testing app updates from user feedback, analyzing interview transcripts, finding video clips, and generating show summaries and social media content. For now, each user can create only one Dot. OpenAI said it plans to support multiple agents in the future, while also increasing speed and task capacity. The company added that Dots includes autonomous action rules, user-defined limits, pre-authorization requirements for certain actions, and an "automatic review" feature for safety checks. OpenAI has already made Dots available to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users and is testing dedicated expert-style Dots for enterprise customers.
