BonkDAO treasury incident remains contained as BONK says products and operations are unaffected
BonkDAO’s community treasury recently suffered a security incident, prompting fresh scrutiny of the BONK ecosystem’s security controls, treasury structure, and operating model. BONK’s position is that the breach targeted BonkDAO’s community-governed treasury rather than BONK’s own product stack, company reserves, or day-to-day operating funds. That distinction sits at the center of the project’s response. According to the information disclosed, the team began investigating and tracing funds within hours, brought in an independent blockchain investigation firm, tracked the stolen assets on-chain, and froze part of the funds with help from a large exchange. One suspect has been identified, law enforcement has become involved, legal action is being prepared, and the governance vulnerability tied to the incident has been closed. BONK has not disclosed the amount frozen or an expected timeline for recovery, saying legal procedures are still underway. The report also argues that the incident has not disrupted BONK’s product activity. BONKTrade posted more than $425 million in June volume, BONK.fun recorded more than $17 million in July volume, BONKbot is doing about $1 million in 24-hour volume, and BONKPLAY generated roughly $1.2 million in trading volume during its first three days. BONK says it now has more than 1 million unique wallet holders, while parts of product fee revenue continue to feed buyback-and-burn mechanisms for $BONK.
