Top LRT Protocols Rewrite Their Playbooks as Restaking Yields Fade

Liquid restaking, once pitched as Ethereum’s yield engine, is losing its economic edge. PANews reports that ether.fi, long seen as the category leader, said on Sept. 29 that it will spin off its restaking business by the end of the quarter and fully pivot to a crypto neobank. CEO Mike Silagadze said restaking no longer offers meaningful yield opportunities and still carries material security risk. As of Sept. 30, the entire liquid restaking market held about $1.45 billion in total value locked, yet generated only about $100,000 in protocol revenue over the prior week. That squeeze is pushing the sector’s biggest players into new business lines. Kelp is shifting from selling restaking yield to offering short-term settlement liquidity through products such as Gain and the not-yet-launched KUSD. Renzo has rebranded as Renzo Finance and is repositioning itself as an on-chain structured yield platform. Swell shut down its Swellchain Layer 2 and redirected resources to Faro, a non-custodial AI trading app on Hyperliquid. Puffer is moving deeper into Ethereum execution infrastructure with Preconf and UniFi Based Rollup, while Bedrock is rebuilding its yield thesis around Bitcoin rather than Ethereum. Across these moves, the common thread is clear: LRT is being recast from a standalone product into a capital entry layer for higher-margin asset management, trading, and infrastructure services.

Puffer partners with Anchorage Digital on custody and stablecoin settlement for UniFi

Puffer said it has entered a partnership with Anchorage Digital, which will serve as the institutional custody provider on day one of the Puffer UniFi launch. The two companies also plan to work together on stablecoin infrastructure, native settlement, institutional payments, and AI agent payments. According to the announcement, the partnership will support stablecoin issuance and native settlement on Puffer UniFi. Anchorage Digital will provide institutional custody and related payments infrastructure, while Puffer UniFi will contribute high-throughput execution, real-time settlement, and access to Ethereum liquidity. Puffer also said Anchorage Digital’s AI agent payments infrastructure for financial institutions and registered merchants will use Puffer UniFi for stablecoin settlement, allowing software agents to initiate payments and complete onchain settlement within an institutional-grade framework.

Puffer outlines security stack for staked ETH, from audits to validator safeguards

Puffer Finance has published a detailed breakdown of the security architecture behind its ETH staking system, arguing that security should cover the entire protocol stack rather than stop at smart contracts. The team said that since launching in 2024, Puffer has reached more than $1 billion in peak TVL and processed over $1 billion in ETH redemptions without pauses, withdrawal restrictions, or a depeg. The article describes a multi-layer model that combines continuous AI-assisted code review, sequential third-party audits, deployment audits, and role-based access controls built with OpenZeppelin Access Manager. Puffer said upgrades proposed by its Operations multisig are subject to a hard-coded 7-day timelock, while a separate Security Council can intervene during that period and a Pauser role can halt the protocol immediately, including through automated monitoring connected to BlockSec Phalcon. Puffer also said node operators must post a 2 ETH bond in pufETH before running validators, with that collateral serving as first-loss capital in slashing events. The company added that users can exit through either instant withdrawals using Vault liquidity for a small fee or a standard fee-free route, and said the withdrawal system has already been tested by more than $1 billion in ETH redemptions.
