OpenAI unveils three research claims spanning math, computer science and physics

OpenAI said on Oct. 26 that its internal models produced three major research results across mathematics, theoretical computer science and physics. The company claims to have disproved the Exponential Time Hypothesis, a foundational assumption that has shaped complexity theory for nearly 30 years; proved the Local Smoothing Conjecture in all dimensions; and established rigorous existence results for certain four-dimensional interacting quantum field theories, including work related to quantum chromodynamics and pure Yang–Mills theory. The announcement follows OpenAI’s earlier release of 722 mathematics manuscripts generated by internal models. This time, the company paired each result with a different review path. For the ETH claim, OpenAI invited Russell Impagliazzo, Ramamohan Paturi and MIT’s Ryan Williams to organize an open and independent review. In mathematics, it released the natural-language manuscript and Lean formalization directly to the community. In physics, a group led by Nobel laureate David Gross will first study and rewrite the material before deciding how it should be published. OpenAI described the model outputs as “raw research data,” drawing a line between generating proofs and building scientific understanding. The company also said outside researchers would participate voluntarily and independently, without NDAs or authorship claims on OpenAI’s behalf.
