Rocket Lab has secured a $397 million contract from the U.S. Space Force for the Space-Based Advanced Maneuvering Target Indicator, or SB-AMTI, program, according to BlockBeats. The contract calls for Rocket Lab to develop, launch and operate multiple Flatellite satellites equipped with space sensors and communications links. Those satellites are intended to provide the U.S. Space Force with target detection, tracking and data services. Serenity said the award points to a bigger role for Rocket Lab inside the U.S. military space architecture. In Serenity’s view, the significance of the deal goes beyond the nearly $400 million in revenue because it shows the U.S. defense system has recognized Rocket Lab’s low Earth orbit satellite constellation capabilities. Rocket Lab plans to use its medium-lift Neutron rocket for the satellite launches tied to the project, a step that aligns with its push to move from being known primarily as a small rocket company to becoming a broader space infrastructure provider. The SB-AMTI program is managed by the U.S. Space Force’s space sensing and target custody office and is aimed at building a space-based system for detecting and tracking airborne threats. The contract also includes options to add more Flatellite satellites in the future.
