Ukrainian police dismantle crypto scam ring that used fake investment platforms and wallet drainers

Ukrainian police and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said they had dismantled an international crypto fraud network that used fake investment platforms to steal funds from victims. The scheme showed fabricated gains on screen to build trust, then prompted users to connect real wallets during a withdrawal "verification" step. That action triggered a wallet drainer, allowing the group to empty funds instead of processing withdrawals. According to the authorities, the operation generated as much as $1 million a month. Investigators have identified at least 62 victims across more than 20 countries, while more than 46 Ukrainians are believed to have been involved in the group’s operations. Police said the platform also collected passport details, phone numbers, email accounts, login credentials and personal photos during registration and identity checks. Investigators traced the group’s infrastructure to servers in the Netherlands and obtained a database containing victim lists, wallet addresses, allegedly stolen amounts, internal communications and operating procedures. Ukrainian police and the SBU then carried out 34 searches in and around Kyiv, seizing more than 100 computers, more than 100 phones, 79 SIM cards, documents, cash and 15 vehicles. The investigation is ongoing.

Ukrainian Police Bust Crypto Scam Network Draining $1M Monthly Via Fake Investment Platform

Ukraine's police and the Security Service (SBU) have dismantled a crypto fraud ring that used a fake investment platform to drain victims' wallets. The network tricked users into connecting wallets and approving small test transactions, then used a hidden 'wallet drainer' to steal funds. 62 victims identified, over 46 Ukrainian citizens involved, with monthly theft up to $1 million. The organizer, a 25-year-old IT specialist, ran multiple offices in Kyiv. Police conducted 34 searches, seizing computers, phones, SIM cards, cash, and vehicles.

SEC Chair Paul Atkins pushes CLARITY Act as Ledger lawsuit, Russian crypto law, and Ukraine fraud bust draw focus

WuBlockchain’s daily crypto news roundup highlighted five developments across regulation, macro data, litigation, and law enforcement. U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Paul Atkins said he wants Congress to move the CLARITY Act quickly and send it to President Donald Trump for signature, while the SEC continues drafting rules for blockchain and crypto asset markets. The U.S. Senate has scheduled a key procedural vote on Sept. 15, and the bill needs 60 votes to advance to formal consideration. Atkins’ remarks came alongside a note that the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission still plan to use existing authority to build out a crypto market oversight framework even if legislation stalls. Elsewhere, U.S. initial jobless claims for the week ended Aug. 29 came in at 206,000, versus expectations of 205,000, with the prior reading revised to 204,000 from 203,000. Hardware wallet maker Ledger was hit with a class action in federal court in the Southern District of New York over alleged failures tied to personal data protection and disclosure. Russia’s digital currency law took effect on Sept. 1, though domestic crypto trading remains on hold pending supporting rules. In Ukraine, police and the SBU said they dismantled a crypto phishing ring in Kyiv that at its peak generated $1 million in monthly turnover.
