Stacks’ Genesis Bond Tries to Give Bitcoin a Native Yield Curve, Paid in BTC

Stacks has launched Genesis Bond, a structure designed to pay Bitcoin holders a 3% annualized yield in BTC while keeping the underlying coins in a standard Bitcoin timelock under the holder’s own key control. In analysis published by Alea Research and translated by TechFlow, the product is framed as a rare attempt to create a native Bitcoin-denominated rate rather than relying on lending or rewards paid in another token. The first bond opened on Sept. 10 at Bitcoin block 966,350, gathered 230.17 BTC, and began weekly payouts on Sept. 17. The mechanism is funded by Stacks miners, who spend BTC to compete for the right to produce Stacks blocks and receive newly minted STX plus fees. Under SIP-045, those BTC flows are routed into a reward pool, with bondholders taking a 3% claim before the remainder is split between STX-only stackers and reserves. Alea Research says the pool reached 4.93 BTC in cycle 143, up 77.0% from cycle 139, implying enough capacity for roughly 2,140 BTC of bonds at the protocol’s 2.0x coverage target. The tradeoff sits in the required STX sidecar. Each bonded BTC must be paired with STX worth at least 5% of the position, exposing holders to STX/BTC moves. The report says a 28.8% drop in STX/BTC would erase the full coupon for one 175-day bond cycle. A second bond window is scheduled for Oct. 10, with contract terms showing a 3% target yield and pricing of 267,384 STX per BTC.
