Starknet Opens First Governance Vote on Researching a Shift to an Independent Post-Quantum Layer 1

Starknet has opened its first governance vote on whether the network should study a possible move away from Ethereum and operate as an independent post-quantum Layer 1. The non-binding Snapshot poll is open from 09:32 UTC on Oct. 15 to the same time on Oct. 22, and only asks whether the research should proceed, not whether a transition should be approved. According to a forum post tied to the vote, Starknet Foundation member Henri said the network’s own components could become quantum-resistant soon, while its bridge and data availability layer still depend on Ethereum’s timeline. The proposal says a switch, if ever pursued, would require a separate governance process. It also states that STRK would remain the token and no new token would be created, while Ethereum-to-Starknet bridges would stay open regardless of the outcome. Early Snapshot data showed 293 votes cast by about 14:40 UTC on Oct. 15, with 99.9% of roughly 179.8 million voting power backing the research option.

Starknet opens community vote on researching a move beyond Ethereum as a post-quantum L1

Starknet has opened a seven-day, non-binding vote asking STRK holders whether the network should study becoming an independent post-quantum Layer 1 rather than remaining tied to Ethereum’s upgrade path. The poll gives tokenholders three choices: support more research, oppose the idea, or stay neutral until more details are available, with voting set to close on Oct. 22 and results to be released afterward. The proposal does not authorize a transition. A favorable result would only indicate support for additional research, while any actual move would still require new proposals and governance votes. StarkWare, the developer behind Starknet, said the idea could let the network pursue quantum-resistant security without waiting for Ethereum’s timeline, since Starknet still depends on Ethereum for parts of its infrastructure such as its bridge and data availability. StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson said quantum-proofing crypto is urgent and argued that progress at Ethereum and Bitcoin has been slower. Earlier signals from Ben-Sasson and Starknet on X on Oct. 8 framed the effort around a 2027 goal of becoming the first fully quantum-resistant network. StarkWare had already published a three-phase roadmap in June, while Ethereum developers formed a dedicated post-quantum team in March targeting initial protocol-level protections by 2029.

Starknet launches Shadow Accounts, with first production integration going live on Oct. 14

Starknet and core developer StarkWare said on Oct. 14, 2026 that they have launched Shadow Accounts, a wallet privacy feature built into the STRK20 privacy framework introduced in June. The feature lets users interact with decentralized finance applications through isolated addresses that do not show any visible on-chain link to a user’s main wallet. At the same time, Starknet released Starknet Wallet API 0.10.4 and starknet.js 10.8.0 for developers, and said the first production deployment would go live the same day. The design assigns a separate persistent address to each dApp interaction, using shielded balances in the main wallet to derive per-dapp addresses. Starknet said this keeps DeFi transactions, call data, and state changes publicly verifiable on-chain while hiding the relationship between a user’s main wallet and specific protocols. The project also said dApps do not need to rewrite smart contracts or rebuild liquidation logic to support the feature. According to the report, lending protocol Vesu Prime has already completed a demo integration for its vSTRK vault. Shadow Accounts also inherit STRK20’s selective disclosure model, allowing users to provide proof of ownership for a transaction to compliance bodies or auditors through an encrypted viewing key. StarkWare said the feature is expected to expand from single-asset vaults to lending, staking networks, on-chain perpetuals, prediction markets, and NFT trading platforms.

Starknet launches Shadow Accounts to mask links between main wallets and DeFi activity

Starknet has rolled out Shadow Accounts, a wallet privacy feature designed to let users interact with DeFi applications without publicly tying those actions to their main wallets. According to StarkWare, the feature creates separate persistent addresses for individual apps and lets users fund them with shielded balances held in Starknet’s STRK20 privacy pool. The setup is meant to let users manage lending, trading and other DeFi positions under different onchain identities. Starknet said the feature hides the connection between a Shadow Account and the wallet that funds it, but it does not make activity invisible. Balances, transactions and positions tied to those accounts still remain publicly visible onchain. Once a DeFi app integrates the feature, users can connect a wallet, switch between public and private modes, deposit assets into a vault and keep positions active through the Shadow Account until funds are withdrawn back into a shielded balance. StarkWare said the system could later expand beyond vaults into liquidity provision, lending, borrowing, staking, derivatives trading, prediction markets and NFT marketplaces. The release follows the company’s broader privacy push on Starknet, including the STRK20 privacy framework introduced in June and a Private Know Your Customer demonstration later that month.

Assets in Starknet’s unified privacy pool top $2 million

StarkWare said more than $2 million worth of assets have now been privatized on Starknet, with 56 different assets included in a single unified privacy pool. The company said the pool brings those assets together under one structure on the network rather than splitting them across separate pools. StarkWare also said STRK20 is supporting privacy-focused DeFi services on Starknet. The update was shared in a post from the company and adds a fresh data point on privacy-related activity within the Starknet ecosystem. No additional breakdown on the asset mix or individual allocations was provided in the post.

STRK jumps 55% in 24 hours, briefly tops $0.12 as Starknet L1 and post-quantum narrative gains traction

STRK, the token tied to Starknet, extended its 24-hour gain to 55% and briefly moved above $0.12 before trading at $0.11, according to HTX market data. The move put it at the top of the altcoin market on the day. Traders appeared to focus on recent comments from StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson, who said blockchains need post-quantum readiness and cryptographic agility as quantum computing and AI acceleration create new security pressure. In remarks at Token2049 and in follow-up comments, Ben-Sasson said Starknet is actively weighing several paths, including separating from Ethereum and becoming an independent Layer 1 network. He said that route would allow the project to control the pace of its security migration, with a target of achieving full quantum resistance by 2027, earlier than Ethereum’s current timeline. The token’s move also came alongside recent product and ecosystem updates. Starknet’s v0.14.4 mainnet release went live on Oct. 5, expanding SNIP-36 single-proof capacity to about 1.1 billion L2 gas and allowing verification of proofs for larger off-chain computation. On Oct. 2, the strkBTC incentive program launched, covering bridge fees for the first 100 bridged BTC and distributing a weekly faucet.

Starknet Weighs Layer 1 Move as It Eyes Quantum-Secure Upgrades by 2027

Starknet is considering a shift to an independent Layer 1 blockchain as it looks to pursue quantum security by 2027, according to The Defiant. The key point in the report is control: StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson said a standalone chain would allow Starknet to manage its own security upgrades instead of waiting for Ethereum’s timeline. That framing suggests the discussion is centered on upgrade autonomy rather than a routine technical adjustment. The report does not provide further implementation details, but it ties the potential move directly to Starknet’s longer-term security plans. The article also notes that The Defiant stores its articles on Filecoin.

Starknet Weighs L1 Shift as STRK Rises 20% on Post-Quantum Push

Starknet, the Ethereum scaling network built by StarkWare, said it is actively considering becoming its own layer-1 blockchain, framing the move around post-quantum security and setting 2027 as its target for becoming a fully quantum-resistant network. The announcement helped lift the STRK token to around $0.073 on Friday, up about 20% over 24 hours and more than double the roughly $0.03 level seen in April, when StarkWare cut staff in a push for revenue. The proposal was outlined by StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson, who argued on X that quantum risk may be closer than many expect and that rapid advances in AI-driven mathematics add another source of urgency. He said Starknet’s current status as an Ethereum layer 2 limits how quantum-safe it can become because it still depends on Ethereum’s base-layer security. If Ethereum does not move quickly enough, becoming an L1 is one of the options under consideration. The idea would give Starknet direct control over its own security upgrades, but it would also force the network to secure and develop itself rather than rely on Ethereum. Starknet’s statement did not explain how existing users and applications would migrate. Ethereum’s roadmap, according to ethereum.org, targets core post-quantum infrastructure around 2029, while Ben-Sasson said Starknet could get there by 2027.
