BlackRock, Coinbase and Strategy Join $15 Million Bitcoin Quantum Defense Push

A new Bitcoin Security Consortium backed by BlackRock, Coinbase, Strategy and six other firms has pledged a combined $15 million over three years to support Bitcoin security research and open-source development focused on quantum-computing defense. According to Decrypt’s Morning Minute newsletter, the group includes Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Block, Blockstream, Fidelity Digital Assets and Galaxy. The consortium will not pool or allocate the capital itself. Each member will directly choose which developers and researchers to fund, while Brink’s Mike Schmidt will coordinate on a volunteer basis. The group also said it will not direct Bitcoin development or take positions on protocol changes. BlackRock digital assets head Robert Mitchnick said Bitcoin Core developers do “incredibly important work,” adding that the effort would expand available funding for Bitcoin’s long-term security. Decrypt also highlighted the scale of the issue the industry is trying to address. While no quantum computer can break Bitcoin cryptography today, about 6.9 million BTC, valued at roughly $450 billion, sit in addresses that would be vulnerable if that changes. The newsletter said proposals such as BIP 360 and post-quantum signature schemes are already being discussed because any upgrade would require years of coordination across wallets, exchanges, miners and users. The same Morning Minute also covered softer ETF flows, CLARITY Act timing risk, MoonPay’s Discover partnership and meme coin volatility.

PA Daily: Whale HYPE staking, Poolin files Chapter 11, and Stripe said to be in talks for OpenRouter

PANews’ July 24 daily roundup pulled together a wide set of crypto, macro, legal, and market developments, with whale activity around HYPE standing out across several on-chain updates. One large holder staked 2.785 million HYPE worth about $164 million through 20 wallets over 11 hours, while another whale moved 2.93 million HYPE, worth roughly $172 million, into Hyperliquid for staking. A separate entity also staked 1.49 million HYPE valued at around $88.2 million. PANews noted that one of the larger staking clusters may be tied to a16z, though that remains unconfirmed. Elsewhere, former bitcoin mining heavyweight Poolin filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the U.S. and plans to sell its Texas mining assets for $52 million. BitMEX, on the same day it announced it would shut down operations on Sept. 23, was hit with a class-action lawsuit seeking 622.66 BTC in damages over alleged fraudulent liquidations. In corporate and funding news, Stripe is reportedly in talks to acquire AI model aggregation platform OpenRouter in a deal that could reach $10 billion, while AI chip startup Etched closed a $300 million Series C at a $10.3 billion post-money valuation. BlackRock, Coinbase and seven other firms also launched a Bitcoin security alliance with a three-year, $15 million funding commitment for open-source developers.
