U.S. Government Seizes $400M in Bitcoin and Assets Linked to Helix Mixer Operator

The U.S. government has taken full legal ownership of more than $400 million in seized cryptocurrency, cash, and real estate tied to Helix, one of the most widely used bitcoin mixing services on the darknet. A federal judge entered a final forfeiture order on January 21, 2026, transferring assets following the conviction of operator Larry Dean Harmon. Assets include 4,500 bitcoin (worth ~$355 million), $325,000 in cash, and an Ohio mansion. Harmon pleaded guilty in 2021, was sentenced to three years in 2024, and was released early in 2025. The case highlights that the darknet is not a safe haven for criminal activity, and law enforcement will continue pursuing cyber-enabled financial crimes.

Miles Guo Sentenced to 30 Years for $1B Fraud Involving Himalaya Coin Crypto Project

On July 1, a US court sentenced Miles Guo (also known as Ho Wan Kwok) to 30 years in prison for racketeering, fraud, and money laundering, following a 2024 jury conviction. The case involves a five-year scheme defrauding global victims of over $1 billion, including the Himalaya Coin (H-Coin) crypto project that raised approximately $500 million by falsely claiming 20% gold backing. The court also ordered forfeiture of nearly $900 million in illicit proceeds, his New Jersey mansion, and luxury cars. The case underscores regulatory risks in celebrity-endorsed crypto projects.

Ukraine Transfers $8.3M in Seized Crypto to State Management for First Time, Eyes Strategic Reserve

Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office announced the transfer of over $8.3 million worth of USDT to a wallet controlled by the Asset Recovery and Management Agency (ARMA), marking the first time the country has officially placed seized crypto assets under state management. The funds originate from a wallet belonging to a member of an international hacker group accused of attacking individuals and businesses in Europe and the US, extorting data, and laundering proceeds through real estate and luxury cars in Ukraine. Four suspects are detained but not yet convicted; estimated losses exceed $100 million. The move comes as Ukraine considers establishing a strategic crypto reserve using assets confiscated through criminal and civil cases, similar to the US approach.
