OneKey founder says an iPhone could serve as a cold wallet, with iPhone 17 and iOS 27 as the minimum bar

OneKey founder Yishi outlined what he sees as the minimum security requirements for turning an iPhone into a cryptocurrency cold wallet. In his post on Oct. 14, he said keeping a device offline alone is not enough to defend against physical extraction by forensic tools. He argued that the baseline should be an iPhone 17 or newer running iOS 27 or later, with the device replaced every one to two years. Yishi said the A19 chip’s Memory Integrity Enforcement, or MIE, improves resistance to vulnerabilities. He also pointed to the security difference between BFU, or Before First Unlock after shutdown, and AFU, or After First Unlock, saying BFU is safer. Based on that, he advised users storing crypto offline to fully power down the device rather than simply disconnect it from the internet. He also warned against storing seed phrases in Notes or Photos and said users should set a strong random password of at least 12 characters. For long-term storage of large holdings, he still recommended using a separate dedicated hardware signing device first.

Liquid Network starts external audit of Elements v23.3.4 as Peg-out restoration work continues

Liquid Network, the Bitcoin sidechain developed by Blockstream, has started an independent external security audit of Elements v23.3.4, according to an official announcement cited by ChainCatcher. The audit is intended to add another layer of security verification before Peg-out operations are restored. At the same time, the Liquid Federation is coordinating an update to the PAK list. That work includes replacing existing key entries and making sure all Peg-out keys are securely stored in cold wallets. The announcement did not give a specific timeline for the resumption of Peg-out activity, but said further progress updates will be released later. The latest move centers on operational security around Liquid’s withdrawal mechanism and shows that both code review and key management are being handled in parallel before services are brought back.

Bitget says private keys were not exposed in its first security crisis, launches independent review

Bitget Greater China head Xie Jiayin addressed community concerns in a recent livestream, calling the incident the first security crisis in the exchange’s eight-year history. He said Bitget has prioritized user asset security since its founding and has maintained a long-term operating record while fending off multiple cyberattack attempts. According to Xie, the incident was traced to a targeted attack on the supply chain of third-party security software. The attacker used a vulnerability in a third-party product to obtain internal network credentials. Bitget said its private keys were not leaked and assets held in cold wallets were not affected. The exchange has brought in security firms Mandiant and SlowMist to conduct an independent review. It also plans to upgrade monitoring and management standards for third-party components. Xie said Bitget is working on a full recovery from the incident and will continue technical and system upgrades aimed at improving security standards.

Mexican prosecutors say musician’s family was killed over Bitcoin cold wallet believed to hold millions

Mexican prosecutors allege that two men targeted the home of Jonathan Meléndez, keyboardist for Camilo Séptimo, in search of a cold wallet they believed held millions of dollars in Bitcoin. The attack left Meléndez, his pregnant wife Ana Paula Barragán, their 3-year-old daughter Sofía, and 21-year-old domestic worker Aleyda Romero dead at the family home in Atizapán de Zaragoza, State of Mexico, on September 1, according to IBTimes UK. The couple’s 6-year-old son survived. Authorities identified the suspects as Diego Sebastián and Gerardo, withholding their surnames under Mexican criminal privacy rules. Prosecutors said Diego Sebastián, described as a business associate of Meléndez, used that relationship to gain access to the home and allegedly offered Gerardo 2 million pesos, about $118,000, to help obtain the crypto. Both men were arrested on September 2. The case adds to a rise in violent attacks against crypto holders. Chainalysis said it documented 46 violent crypto incidents through late June, with more than $30 million stolen in the first half of 2026. Home invasions made up 37% of those cases.

Mexican prosecutors say suspects killed four people while searching for Bitcoin cold wallet worth millions

State prosecutors in Mexico said two suspects are accused of killing four people while trying to find a cold wallet believed to hold millions of dollars in Bitcoin. The case is tied to a residence in Atizapán de Zaragoza, where authorities say the victims included Jonathan Meléndez, keyboardist for rock band Camilo Séptimo, his pregnant wife, their daughter and an employee. Prosecutors also said the family’s golden retriever was killed. According to Mexico State’s Attorney General’s Office, the two suspects, identified as Diego Sebastián and Gerardo, are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, when a judge will decide whether there is enough evidence to move the criminal case forward. Mexico’s security minister Omar García Harfuch said one of the suspects was a business partner of the victim and allegedly used that connection to gain access to the home. If convicted, the pair could face prison terms ranging from 25 to 70 years per victim. Cointelegraph, citing CertiK and Chainalysis, said violent coercion attacks targeting crypto holders have continued to rise, with 52 such cases reported globally in the first half of 2026 and more than $30 million in stolen crypto linked to the incidents.
