If Bitcoin Ends Up as Digital Gold Alone, Has It Fallen Short?

A market analysis piece from Foresight centers on a remark attributed to Jack Dorsey: if Bitcoin ends up being only “digital gold,” then it has failed. The article argues that Bitcoin can still be considered successful even if its role remains primarily that of a store-of-value asset, but says that outcome would also show the limits of its original ambition. In the author’s reading, Dorsey’s real point is not that store-of-value status is worthless, but that Bitcoin was meant to become a peer-to-peer electronic cash system rather than an asset bought, held and expected to appreciate. The piece revisits earlier attempts to expand Bitcoin’s use cases, including efforts to push it into everyday transactions and experiments with issuing new assets such as XCP. It says those efforts peaked during the rise of the inscriptions ecosystem, yet did not mature into durable, large-scale applications. The author attributes that result to Bitcoin Core’s resistance to changes in the scripting model and argues that Bitcoin is unlikely to support Ethereum-like Turing-complete contracts on-chain. Based on that view, the article concludes that Bitcoin will probably remain centered on value storage rather than broad commercial use, and that Dorsey’s expectation for Bitcoin as electronic cash is unlikely to be realized.

BIP-352 silent payments distribution test transfers are being processed in batches of 100 inscriptions per round

Odaily reported, citing monitoring by shhhhh, that transfers tied to the BIP-352 silent payments distribution test are currently being processed in batches of 100 inscriptions per round. The update did not provide additional figures or a broader timeline, but said progress can be tracked through the relevant address. The note was published as a brief market update and focused on the current transfer cadence rather than offering extra background. Based on the information provided, the key point is that the distribution test remains active and that observers can follow its status on-chain through the address associated with the process.

Bitcoin’s BIP-110 fork stalls with 2.6% miner support, and Luke Dashjr loses BIP editor role

Bitcoin developer Luke Dashjr’s BIP-110 soft fork effort collapsed after drawing only about 2.6% miner support, far short of the 55% threshold set for activation. The forked chain produced just two blocks before stalling, while Bitcoin’s main chain continued operating normally. The proposal had aimed to curb the use of Bitcoin block space for images, text and other non-financial data, taking aim at inscription activity that expanded after the rise of the Ordinals protocol. After the failed push, Dashjr was removed from his editor role for Bitcoin Improvement Proposals, or BIPs. Critics accused him of misusing editorial authority by assigning a BIP number before enough discussion had taken place and merging updates into the repository outside normal procedure. Bitcoin developer Mark Erhardt, in backing the removal motion, said Dashjr had contributed almost none of the routine editorial maintenance since joining the team in April 2024. Dashjr rejected the accusations on X, calling the move an abuse of power and saying the claims were false. He also said he would temporarily step down as chairman and CTO of Bitcoin mining pool Ocean to focus on Bitcoin and open-source projects. The dispute now spans both inscription policy and governance procedure.

BIP-110 Backed by Only 2.6% of Miners, Saylor Sees Stagnation or Irrelevance

According to BlockBeats, on Aug. 8, Michael Saylor, founder of Strategy, said that only 2.6% of miners have signaled support for BIP-110, meaning the proposal has not gained broad support. In the same post, Saylor pointed out that at block height 961,632, nodes would reject blocks that do not signal in favor of BIP-110. He went on to say that after that point, BIP-110 would either stall or fork into an irrelevant existence, while Bitcoin itself would continue to run normally. 'Bitcoin is working as designed,' Saylor wrote. BIP-110 is a temporary soft fork proposal designed to add seven consensus restrictions over roughly a one-year period. Those restrictions include limiting new script public key lengths, placing caps on certain pushed data and witness item sizes, and disabling some Taproot extension paths. The proposal intends to substantially reduce arbitrary non-payment data that can be embedded in transactions, such as inscriptions and runes. This, in turn, would reduce the load on nodes, suppress spam data, and help Bitcoin stay focused on its role as money.

PlanB opposes Bitcoin BIP-110, says fork backers misunderstand decentralization

PlanB said on July 25 that he opposes Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 110, or BIP-110, arguing that supporters of the fork do not fully understand three issues: Bitcoin is a decentralized bearer asset, Bitcoin enthusiasts dislike spam even more than they do, and the reasons the earlier Bitcoin Cash split failed. The proposal is framed as a temporary soft fork that would add seven consensus restrictions for roughly one year, including limits on new script public key length, parts of pushed data and witness item sizes, and the disabling of some Taproot extension paths. Its stated aim is to sharply reduce arbitrary non-payment data embedded in Bitcoin transactions, such as inscriptions and runes, cut node burden, curb spam data, and keep Bitcoin focused on monetary use. Miner support is currently about 1%, far below the 55% threshold required for passage, leaving its chances of becoming a formal Bitcoin main-chain rule very slim. A final outcome is expected around August 7 to 8, when the mandatory signaling window opens.
