Optimum launches mump2p on Ethereum mainnet as ether.fi makes it mandatory for node operators

Optimum, a networking startup led by MIT professor Muriel Médard, said its block propagation software mump2p is now live on the Ethereum mainnet. The rollout has already been adopted at scale: liquid staking protocol ether.fi has made mump2p a mandatory requirement for all 12 of its node operators, after previously offering it as an optional tool. According to Optimum, 16 node operators are now running the software in production, together managing about 22,000 validator keys and more than 1.4 million staked ETH, representing over 3% of all ETH staked on Ethereum. Named partners include Blockdaemon, Everstake, P2P.org, Stakefish, and Bitcoin Suisse. Optimum said mump2p runs as a sidecar gateway on top of libp2p rather than replacing Ethereum’s default GossipSub, and uses random linear network coding. The company reported that blocks arrive 2.42 times faster than with GossipSub, while arrival-time variance is reduced by about 7.88 times. Optimum launched a private testnet in June 2025, previously raised an $11 million seed round led by 1kx, and plans to expand the protocol to other high-throughput blockchains after Ethereum.

Ether.fi requires all 12 of its node operators to use Optimum’s mump2p on Ethereum

Optimum, a networking startup led by MIT professor Muriel Médard, said Tuesday that its block-propagation software mump2p is now running in production on Ethereum mainnet and that ether.fi has made the software mandatory for all 12 of its node operators. According to the company, ether.fi has 16 node operators on the protocol, running about 22,000 validator keys with more than 1.4 million ETH staked, which Optimum said represents over 3% of all staked ETH. Named operators include Blockdaemon, Everstake, P2P.org, Stakefish, and Bitcoin Suisse. Optimum said ether.fi had previously treated the software as optional. The company also cited its own performance figures, saying blocks arrived 2.42 times faster than with GossipSub and that arrival-time variance was about 7.88 times lower. It added that mump2p users received the block first in nine out of 10 measurements, though the announcement did not explain how those figures were collected. Optimum also disclosed about $3.7 billion in what it called “Total Value Boosted,” without defining the metric. The company said it ran a private testnet with seven operators in June 2025, two months after raising an $11 million seed round led by 1kx, and plans to bring the protocol to other high-throughput blockchains after Ethereum.
