BNB Chain adds BEP-706 to Jenner hard fork for millisecond block timestamps

BNB Chain said the BEP-706 proposal has been included in the Jenner hard fork. The change adds a precompiled contract at address 0x70, allowing smart contracts to read the current block timestamp in milliseconds. Until now, contracts could only access second-level time through block.timestamp, which made it impossible to tell apart blocks produced within the same second. Under BEP-706, developers can retrieve the number of milliseconds since the Unix epoch. BNB Chain said this can improve precision for time-sensitive signed quotes, auction closing times, and freshness checks for price oracle updates. The upgrade is incremental and does not change the existing second-based return behavior of block.timestamp.
