Binance releases post-hack proof of reserves, lets users verify 1:1 backing for 10 major tokens

Binance said users holding 10 major assets on the exchange can now verify that those balances were backed at at least a 1:1 ratio in a reserve snapshot taken on Oct. 31. The exchange announced at 8:45 p.m. Taipei time on Nov. 2 that the full zero-knowledge proof for that snapshot had been completed within its expected timeline. Binance said the covered assets include BTC, ETH, USDT, BNB, SOL, USDC, XRP, USD1, RLUSD and ZEC, and repeated that it would absorb the financial impact of the theft rather than pass losses on to users. The proof combines a Merkle Tree, which lets users confirm their balances were included in the snapshot, with a zk-SNARK proof showing aggregate reserves were at least 1:1 without exposing individual balances. Binance also said about 95% of the affected amount has already been replenished, while the remaining 5% involves lower-liquidity tokens outside the 10 listed assets. A new snapshot covering more tokens is planned for Nov. 4, with the resulting proof expected to take 40 to 50 hours to generate.

Vitalik: EIP-8141 Transaction Type to Prepare Ethereum for Decentralized Scaling in Coming Years

Vitalik Buterin posted on X that recent research on transaction formats has given Ethereum a clearer understanding of 'actions' and 'dependencies,' which can be optimized separately. Dependencies, including signatures, Merkle proofs, and ZK-SNARKs/STARKs, can be processed in parallel; over 90% of Ethereum activity does not require dynamic flexibility. EIP-8141 aims toward a generic, minimal call list, with new state types, recursive STARK mempools, and keyed nonces also part of this direction.

Zakura team releases Zakura Common, a cryptography and protocol library for Zcash

The team behind Zakura, a full-node client for Zcash, has released Zakura Common, a cryptography and protocol library built for the Zcash ecosystem, according to ChainCatcher. Official benchmark results show major performance gains across several workloads. On mobile devices, proof generation was more than 14 times faster, while desktop proof generation improved by more than 5 times. The benchmarks also showed Sinsemilla hashing running more than 21 times faster, trial decryption improving by more than 1.5 times, and zk-SNARK verification speeding up by 4x to 8x. In many cases, the wait time for wallets to create transactions was reduced from more than 3 seconds to under 200 milliseconds. The upgrade does not require a network upgrade. The codebase has been open-sourced under dual MIT and Apache 2.0 licenses, and Zakura 1.3.0 will move to this technology stack.
