Everton beat Newcastle United 3-1 in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Thursday to reach the last eight. Before kick-off, the club confirmed that Jack Grealish was unavailable for selection because of a breach of club discipline.
Match result
James Garner, Hayden Hackney and Thierno Barry scored for Everton, while Dan Burn got a late consolation for Newcastle United.
Club statement
Everton wrote in a post on X: "Jarrad Branthwaite remains sidelined for a second successive game due to concussion protocols, while Jack Grealish is unavailable for selection due to a breach of Club discipline."
Why Grealish was absent
According to talkSPORT, Grealish was axed from the fourth-round tie following an unauthorised absence from a recent Everton training session. Grealish had also missed Everton's 2-0 Premier League defeat against Arsenal, and club officials attributed that omission to illness.
His appearances after returning
Before the match against Arsenal, Grealish had been included in every Everton matchday squad since returning to Merseyside late in the summer window. He made three league starts and two substitute appearances after returning to Everton, after playing 77 minutes in the third-round cup win over Wolves.
