Brussels prosecutors have requested a two-year prison sentence and a €105,000 fine for Radja Nainggolan over alleged money laundering. The case stems from his arrest in January 2025 during a wider anti-narcotics investigation in Antwerp, and his defence is scheduled to present its arguments before the Brussels court on November 13.
Prosecutors' request
Prosecutors asked for a two-year custodial sentence and a €105,000 fine. State investigators believe Nainggolan should still be convicted for handling illicit funds exceeding €100,000.
Detailing the transaction during the court session, the prosecutor said: "Nainggolan received €105,000 in cash from Sekkaki, who asked for the money to be transferred to his mother's account."
Scope of the case
The case is linked to a wider anti-narcotics investigation in Antwerp in January 2025. Prosecutors have cleared Nainggolan of direct involvement in narcotics or a criminal organisation.
Nainggolan told investigators he borrowed the cash from Sekkaki to maintain his personal lifestyle after his bank accounts were frozen following a divorce from his ex-wife.
Defence position and schedule
Nainggolan's lawyer Mounir Souidi said the defence will seek a complete acquittal. Souidi said: "We have already demonstrated that there was no truth to the previous charges; only money laundering remains, but even that is unfounded."
Nainggolan's legal team are scheduled to deliver their defence arguments before the Brussels court on November 13. GOAL reported that, according to Belgian media reports, Nainggolan could attend the hearing in person after missing the latest session.
Club status
Nainggolan is on the books at second-division side Patro Eisden until a final verdict is reached.
