Niclas Fullkrug scored twice against Mainz and, according to Flashscore, has moved clear at the top of the Bundesliga scoring chart.

Flashscore reported on Tuesday that Niclas Fullkrug has rediscovered his goalscoring form in his second spell with Werder Bremen after difficult spells at West Ham and AC Milan. Fullkrug scored his seventh and eighth goals of the campaign against Mainz on Saturday.

Strong Bundesliga start

Flashscore said Fullkrug has pulled ahead at the top of the German Bundesliga scoring chart. Flashscore said his impressive start to this campaign is his best goal-scoring return in a season since 2023/24, when he scored 12 times for Dortmund.

His second penalty against Mainz put him level with Rudi Voller as the only other Bremen player in Bundesliga history to score eight times in the first seven games of a season, dating back to 1985/86. Fullkrug ended the 2022/23 season at the top of the scoring leaderboard with 16 goals.

After West Ham

Fullkrug's transfer to West Ham United in August 2024 failed to live up to the hype. He scored 3 goals in 29 total appearances for West Ham.

Fullkrug said: "England probably isn't made for me as a type of player or as an athlete either ."

Flashscore said Fullkrug was often asked to do extensive, draining recovery runs over 50 meters at West Ham, resulting in persistent hamstring, calf, and non-muscle physical setbacks.

Loan spell and Germany record

Fullkrug was loaned to AC Milan for the remainder of last season in January. At AC Milan, Fullkrug made 20 appearances, started 3 times, was subbed on 17 times, and averaged 33 minutes per game.

After making his Germany debut in a friendly against Oman shortly before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Fullkrug has scored 14 goals in 24 appearances for Germany.

Bremen set-piece output

Werder Bremen have already scored five times from dead-ball situations this season. Werder Bremen waited until Matchday 25 for their first set-piece goal of the previous campaign.

Werder Bremen travel to Borussia Dortmund in the German Cup on Tuesday night.
