GOAL assessed Bayern Munich's early-season unbeaten run before Bundesliga matches against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday and a Champions League trip to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, and said defensive vulnerabilities were a flaw. Bayern are the only club in Europe’s top five leagues still unbeaten.
Start to the season
Last season, Bayern's 16 consecutive wins gave them the best start to a season in the history of Europe’s top five leagues. AC Milan had opened the 1992/93 season with 13 straight wins. Bayern did not drop their first points last season until 8 November, when they drew 2-2 with Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.
Schalke 04 held Bayern to a 0-0 draw in the Bundesliga in their fourth competitive match of this season. After 13 matches, Bayern have dropped points on four occasions, drawing with Schalke 04, FC Augsburg, Viking Stavanger and Arsenal. Barcelona, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan have all lost at least twice this season.
Attacking output
Bayern have scored 47 goals, an average of 3.6 per game, after 13 matches. Michael Olise has 19 goal contributions after 13 games, while Harry Kane has 17 goal contributions after 13 games.
Defensive record
Bayern have conceded 14 goals and kept three clean sheets in 13 competitive matches. Bayern have conceded in six straight competitive matches, including at home to 1. FC Magdeburg in the DFB Cup.
Selection at the back
Min-Jae Kim and Jonathan Tah are competing for the place alongside Dayot Upamecano. Personnel shortages have forced Laimer, Brown and Davies into more attacking roles.
Opportunities on the flanks
Josip Stanisic, Konrad Laimer, Nathaniel Brown and Alphonso Davies have had a similar number of opportunities on the flanks.
