Barcelona reserve-team player Guillem Victor joined first-team training on Thursday as defensive injuries affected the club before Saturday's La Liga match with Alaves. Flick turned to the reserve team, giving the 19-year-old a fresh chance to show what he can do.
Called into Thursday training
Guillem Victor was in Barcelona's training session on Thursday. GOAL reported that he caught the eye of coach Hansi Flick in that session.
Defensive injuries before Alaves
Barcelona were dealing with defensive injuries ahead of Saturday's La Liga clash with Alaves. Xavi Espart was out for seven weeks, while Eric Garcia and Jules Kounde were not ready.
His path in the reserve setup
Guillem Victor joined the La Masia academy aged 10. He started out as a defensive midfielder before shifting to full-back. During one season with the second youth team, Guillem played at right-back and left-back, centre-back, defensive midfielder and even second striker.
He had started every match bar the first. Landry Farre's switch to the left helped cement Guillem Victor at right-back. GOAL reported that reserve team coach Juliano Belletti trusts him completely.
What people around him said
According to the Catalan newspaper Sport, those close to Guillem Victor said he "has boldness and a very strong personality. He is not the type of player who complains if the coach does not play him, but rather overcomes difficulties".
People who follow him daily on and off the pitch said: "When he needs to focus on football, he does so 100%, but he also knows how to detach himself from the atmosphere of the game, and spends time with his friends. He manages it well".
