Manchester United lost 2-0 to Chelsea in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge in London on Saturday. After the match, talkSPORT pundit Martin Keown criticised Lisandro Martinez and blamed Michael Carrick and his coaching staff for the defending on Chelsea's opening goal.
Result and league position
Martinez was sent off in the 63rd minute after picking up two yellow cards. The result means Manchester United are without a win in their last nine matches in all competitions and are a place above the Premier League bottom three on goal difference.
Manchester United will take on AS Roma at Old Trafford in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Keown's criticism of Martinez
Keown said on talkSPORT: "Everything that could go wrong is going wrong at Manchester United, isn’t it?"
Keown said on talkSPORT: "Key players like Martinez, he makes a mistake for virtually every game. There’s no doubt about that."
Keown said Martinez was at fault for Chelsea's opening goal from Morgan Rogers.
What Keown said about the defending
Keown said on talkSPORT: "Like, even the goal that they conceded, the first one, Morgan Rogers, it’s a fantastic goal, by the way."
Keown said on talkSPORT: "But then in that situation, I would say, I would look at the management and say, okay, I am going to give you a little bit of a lesson here on defending on that one, right."
Keown said on talkSPORT: "The Arsenal back-four that we had, we would have rushed up to the ball with Morgan Rogers."
Keown said on talkSPORT: "The player on the ball is the most important person."
Keown said on talkSPORT: "You don’t run away. There’s a chance, if he starts to travel with it, right, he’s going to cause disruption."
Keown said on talkSPORT: "Martinez has got to come up and over and supress it. Maguire needs to come up, too."
Keown said on talkSPORT: "So, look, when you are on the training pitch, you know, what are we working on?"
Romano on Martinez's future
Martinez joined Manchester United from Ajax in 2022 for a total fee of £57million. He is under contract at Manchester United until the summer of 2027, with an option to extend it by another year.
Fabrizio Romano said there will be direct contacts between Martinez's camp and Manchester United over the next days and weeks to assess the situation and consider all the possibilities. Romano said discussions are expected to follow regarding Martinez's future.
