At Stamford Bridge in the 2018-19 season, Manchester United were leading 2-1 through an Anthony Martial double before Ross Barkley scored a 98th-minute equaliser. After the goal, Jose Mourinho clashed with Chelsea staff and both Mourinho and Maurizio Sarri later addressed what happened.
What happened after Barkley scored
Chelsea coach Marco Ianni celebrated Barkley’s goal by pumping his fists in Mourinho’s direction. Mourinho then had to be held back by stewards and United staff as he tried to confront Ianni.
Mourinho also gestured three fingers at Chelsea fans, signifying the number of league championships he won for Chelsea.
Sarri on Chelsea's response
Asked about the ruckus after the game, Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri said: "Sincerely I have not seen but I have spoken with Jose then I have spoken with a member of staff because I think we were on the wrong side so I have dealt with it immediately."
Sarri also said: "If I speak to a member of staff and am very hard I cannot come here and tell everything because then I am not credible with the staff."
Mourinho on the apology
Following the match, Mourinho said: "I am not annoyed with anything. What happened with Sarri’s assistant, Sarri was the first one to come to me and say he will resolve it."
He also said: "I don’t think he deserves more than what he got. He apologised to me, I accept his apologies, I think he deserves a second chance, I don’t think he deserves to be sacked."
Mourinho added: "It’s the end of story, with me. Let him work, everybody makes mistakes, I made mistakes."
FA action
Ianni was fined £6,000 by the FA after admitting to an improper conduct charge for his celebrations, and both clubs and Mourinho were reminded of their responsibilities.
