Cristian Romero said he would give Argentina's No. 10 jersey to Julián Alvarez. Argentina will take its first tentative steps in a post-Messi era in the November international break.
Romero's choice
Speaking to YouTuber Gastón Edul, Romero said who he would pick for the jersey. He said: "Me, I would give it to Julián ."
He added: "I don’t know, I see him with this humble profile, a family man, a good guy, with all the qualities that he has."
Why he picked Alvarez
Romero said: "We have many important players in the national team. I say Julián because he has all the necessary qualities to wear the 10."
After Messi's exit
Sports Illustrated described Romero as the newly appointed Argentina captain post-Messi. Messi ended his national team career with a send-off match against Benin in October, and Argentina won that game 3–0 with Messi among the scorers.
Sports Illustrated described the match as “the Last Tango”.
